On my way home I picked up a sweet little bolt action .22 - Savage. I like the looks and it fits me just perfectly, but there is one minor problem. It's brand new, and I haven't fired it yet (I'll take it to the range Saturday), but I loaded the magazine and cycled the rounds through. The test was done with round-nosed CCI Mini-Mags. (I will also test it at the range with Federal Bulk, Remington Gold Nose, Remington Thunderbolts, Remington Sub-sonic, CCI Mini-Mag hollowpoints, CCI Blazers, and CCI Stingers.)

The problem I discovered is that only nine rounds fit nicely in the ten round magazine, and the first three rounds of those don't feed properly. After that, the remaining six rounds feed just fine. In effect, I've got a six round magazine. It doesn't bother me enough to want to send the rifle back, but I'd like to know why it's doing this. Is the magazine just new and needing some shooting time? Is this just a flaw with the rifle that works out later, or is there something more? If I buy a couple of other magazines, will I encounter the same problems with them?

I picked mine up back in early January. Make sure you oil it (with good stuff) before you take it to the range, it's a little dry from the factory. Also, I got a feeling that the bolt assembly and the receiver were a little "rough" right out of the box, which led to a gritty action, it kinda worried me. After about 500 rounds, EVERYTHING is resolved. The magazine spring loosened up and began to load just fine, the action broke itself in (you'll notice LOTS of little scratches on the bolt assembly from it rubbing at the metal on the receiver). It's now one of my favorite guns I own. I got the Accu-Trigger model, and I don't want to brag, but the thing isn't just a tack driver, it's a LASER.

Shoot it a few times, let it break in, you won't be dissappointed.

So if it likes the Federal bulk stuff, I should just shoot a big box of it at the range to break it in?
