I was able to acquire something from my wish list several years ago…a Savage 24 in .22 WMR over 20 gauge. It was well used, with some rust and some bluing gone. My goal was to have something for small game hunting and varmint control. I initially had some problems with occasional light strikes with the .22, but I disassembled it and throughly cleaned the hammer spring (lots of accumulated filth) and lightly filed the firing pin to remove the rounded edges. This seems to have helped.
I finally had some free time, and was able to refinish it. I sanded the stock to remove the original finish, and removed the rust and smoothed the metal with very fine sandpaper. The metal was covered with Duracoat in matte black, and the stock got 10 coats of Danish oil with a topcoat of poly.
I really liked the Duracoat…easy to apply and it was very smooth. It definitely is not a classic blued look, and definitely changed the look, but should be very durable for walking around the nearby state forest.
With the stock pouch reinstalled…Convenient for carrying a small knife, a few 20 gauge shells, a tin of .22 WMR, small compass, and matches. The sling is paracord that I wove together.
