Requesting assistance in identifying a rusted rifle I obtained in poor functional condition, It is marked Savage Model 5 on the barrel, but it is a pump action. I normally use the Gunparts site as a starting point, but the only Model % shows is a bolt action. If I can figure out how to do it I would post a picture. It is a tube feed .. adult sized can't locate a serial number. Any guidance would be apprciated

You might google Savage Model 25 and see if that matches, other wise it will take a more knowledgeable person than myself , Gunda Din

Boy, it's a total mystery to me.

The only reference I can find at all to a Savage Model 5 is a tube-fed .22 Bolt-action they made 1936 - 1961.

According to my book, they never made a pump with a round tube receiver like yours.

It is also very odd that they would have used the same model number on two totally different types of rifles?

But it seems you have one!

Its an odd, complex action too. I am still researching but can't find any mention.

I'm stumped. The action looks like the old Savage autoloader (Model 6, etc.) action without the bolt handle or the slot for it and the magazine looks like that magazine as well.

One question for Fowler: Where are you located?

The reason I ask is that Savage (and other companies) sometimes made up special guns for countries where some conventional model was banned or restricted. If the Savage autoloaders were banned in some area, a pump action might allow Savage to use mainly autoloader parts and still sell rifles in that area. Such guns often don't appear in American reference books or even in on-line information.

Or it could be a model shop product, based on the idea that it would let Savage get a pump gun in the line to compete with Winchester while using as many current parts as possible. If so, it apparently was not marketed.
