Savage or Remington?

How "squarish" are they, sticky out points, etc? I'm waffling between an @one, or a ProV with adjustable cheek rest for my 7.
They are a bit squarish, but easy adjustment to LOP and cheek piece. Very sturdy. I don't have any base line to compare to other adjustable stocks though. I can't judge it against other options. Seems to be a good stock.

I am a Remington fan. That said, if you are going to keep your rifle bone stock, I'd give the Savage the nod. I bought a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .243 specifically as a project rifle. Got a great deal on it at $400 delivered. The SPS stock is junk; I replaced it with a Grayboe Renegade. The X-Mark Pro trigger isn't junk, but it's nothing to write home about, either; I replaced it with a Timney. Took the rig to my gunsmith and had him pull the barrel, square the receiver face and bolt, set the barrel back and re-chamber it in .243 Ackley, and bed the action. So my $400 rifle is now a $900 rifle, not including optics. Initial load development suggests that it will be a better-than-0.5 MOA rifle. But your stock Savage is likely to be pretty close to that out of the box with good hand loads.

Newtosavage is correct about Remington throats. I also have a Remington 700 LTR in .308. While it shoots sub-MOA, the throat/freebore is longer than I'd like; I can't reach the lands even with a 190 grain SMK. That will be fixed when I eventually re-barrel it.

Bottom line: buy the Savage (you'll like the 6.5) unless you like projects. I remain a Remington guy. My next 700 will begin as a trued action on which I will build what I want with a McGowen or Criterion "Remage" barrel.

They’re square. And ugly as sin in my book. I’m a fan of the Pro-v, not so of the At-One. Everything you touch on the At-one is plastic, since it’s all of the parts which need to be adjustable. Not a fan at all. My son (4.5yrs old) thought it looked cool and felt good at the NRA National Meeting last wknd, but it is a long ways from what I’m wanting in a stock for my own rifle. I use Pro-v’s on a lot of my own rifles.

To the Op question of Savage vs. Remington, I tend to favor the Rem over the Savage, but with the caveat - I only buy stripped Remington actions, blueprinted by PT&G. No recent manufacture Rem actions for me. The Savage 12 is one of the only factory rifles I would willingly buy off of the shelf with the expectation/intention to leave it largely as it is. The Remington’s would only be donors.

I think you misspelled "T/C Compass"...

Far and away the most accurate $300 rifle. Easy trigger to bring down to 3lbs for about $2...I shot sub MOA with handloads at 100 and 200yds with one in .300WM AND .308Win. Threaded for brake or can. Never liked Remington...anything...and Savage while accurate just seem plain ugly.

If your looking at 7.62x51mm, then I would look at the Mossberg scout. Affordable and has had rave reviews. I liked its feel when I checked one out at the store recently.

Definitely would love to get one. Taking AR10 mags would be great.

Just checked out the Compass. Not bad, the local Cabelas has all of the rifles mentioned in stock. I may stop by this week and handle them to see which feels right.
