Wow;

I just checked the SWFA website for the Nikon Monarch 3 2.5-10X mil-dot scope. Their price is right on the top of your budget at $399.95. I don't have this exact scope, but I do have several Nikon mil-dots & have no reservations about suggesting this one based on my experience. I have had a BDC Nikon & sold it, replaced with a mil-dot. The mil-dot reticle gives you everything the BDC does and allows for wind correction, which the BDC fails to do. I don't know where you normally hunt, but on the front range of the Rockies - the wind blows.

Or, once upon a time in Casper Wyoming you could buy a bumper sticker that read:

CASPER WYOMING, CAST IRON KITE FLYING CAPITOL OF THE WORLD

The Tikka is the best built, best finished, most accurate out of the box, and has the best stock trigger. Sadly, they don't fit me and aftermarket stock selections for the Tikka are relatively poor. for that reason alone, I have sold mine and don't buy 'em as a general rule...

Between the Savage and the Ruger, I prefer the Ruger. I don't find the Savage compellingly superior enough in terms of performance to be willing to sacrifice controlled round feed for a push feed. I would make that sacrifice for the Tikka, but alas....

My Hawkeye's have all been highly satisfying and hunting accurate.

cant go wrong with tikka or ruger. but id take the tikka for first choice. go to a shop that has both and shoulder them and see witch one feels better. the tikka has an excellent trigger thats adjustable, the rugers pretty stiff however you can buy a replacement spring for the rugers trigger that is super easy to change and it definitely helps it.

I too am floored when I see threads like this and Weatherby isn't even on the list.
good point, id definitely take a weatherby2 stainless over a ruger or remington . had one in a 257 in my local shop that i wanted but someone bought it and the shop owner cut me a deal on my rem 7mag rmef, so with me being impatient i bought the rem instead of ordering the weatherby

Well, I went with the Tikka. I went in with the mindset a month ago that the Savage was the only one I wanted....it finished last after comparing the others to it.

I was very torn between the Ruger and Tikka; in the end I think it was the fact that Sako/Tikka does the bolt gun proud, and I have heard mix reviews on Ruger centerfire rifles. Still a little torn, but I went with the Tikka.

The pick was already made. If you read my OP, you will see that I already sent Bud's the payment. I was trying (still am) to see what popular opinion was on the "3" and why.

I have a Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40 on my 30-06 Tikka T3 Lite.

It's been wonderful! Check www.overstock.com -- they often have awesome deals on scopes, but only have a few of them at a time, so it's hit or miss.

I own all three. Tikka t3 lite in .223, a Savage 12FV in .22-250, and Ruger M77 Mark II in .270 win and .338 win mag (both stainless, one synthetic and one laminated). I like the Rugers best for hunting. The Tikka has a removable magazine that I don't really like very much, and the trigger guard is plastic. It is very accurate, but so light that the idea of shooting this rifle in anything more powerful than a .243 seems like it would be painful. The savage does not feed great, but that is OK for a target/varmint rifle. I am thinking of adding a .308 to the arsenal, and the leading candidate so far is a stainless laminated Ruger.

I put Leupold VX-2 scopes on most of my guns, particularly the ones that have some recoil, like the .338. The extra eye relief is very nice, and the lifetime warranty, which I have never had to use, is comforting. I did recently put a Redfield Revolution on a rifle (they are owned by Leupold and have the same warranty) and it has been a pretty good scope so far.

Well, still waiting for Bud's to ship me the rifle. It has been in the "shipping" stage for over a week.....never had an order from them take this long. Anyway....

I'm leaning towards the Nikon 2.5-10x42 Monarch 3 and a DNZ Game Reaper mount.

My question is, and I want the scope as low as possible, can I get by with a low mount DNZ, or should I go medium with that scope?

I think you could get away with low Dnz mounts with that scope and rifle. I usually use 40mm scopes, and have a little extra room in DNZ lows, the notable exception being on my X-bolt where the scope bell is almost on the barrel. The low DNZ mounts on my Remington 700 leave enough room for a 50mm scope though, so go figure.

Finally Done - Thanks for the suggestions

Finally got it together.

I went with Talley lightweights and a Nikon Prostaff 5 2.5-10x40.

Range report to follow.

Sir;

I think that's a fine lookin' rig. I also have every confidence that you're going to be pleased with the way it shoots.

My load for my Tikka .30-06 is: Hornady 150 grain interlock part # 3031, 59.8 grains of IMR4350, Winchester brass, CCI lg rifle primer. Bullets seated to give .015" off lands. Just a note, but I tried some non-lead bullets - shot a nice pattern for a 20 guage.
