Security Guard Shot, Unharmed Thanks To Vest

A private security guard took a bullet to the chest this weekend but escaped harm thanks to a protective vest.
Henry Dawkins, who was working as a private security guard on the Saturday overnight shift at Pleasant Ridge Chili on Montgomery Road, was trying to break up a fight in the parking lot.

Dawkins said four juveniles got into a car and as it pulled out onto Montgomery Road the driver stuck a gun out the window and opened fire at him as he pulled away.

Dawkins said the driver shot off six to seven rounds, one of which hit his chest.

Dawkins was struck once in the upper right chest area, barely leaving a knick in the armor.

"It knocked me back," said Dawkins. "I fell on the ground -- it just felt like a big punch, a big blow to my chest."

But Dawkin's bullet-proof vest saved him.

"I'm not a Cincinnati police officer, so I never expected getting shot," said Dawkins, "but, not I know you've got to expect the unexpected."

"I was blessed," said Dawkins.

A short time later police arrested a suspect, Jonathon White, 28-years old, of Avondale.

White has been charged in connection with the shooting. Charges include assault, reckless operation, driving under suspension as well as two counts of drug abuse.

White is due to appear in court on Monday.

Just another example of why I think security guards, whether working armed or unarmed positions, should have the option of being issued body armor by their employers!

 :what:

Umm, I hope they also include attempted murder!!! :cuss:

The impacting bullet did not knock him down. He may have fallen down after the impact, but not because of kinetic force. More likely, he went down as a reaction, potentially an involuntary reaction, but not actually due to force.

I agree
The charges sound light...
So far.

Whether company supplied or self purchased, he was definately smart in not only having a vest, but in wearing it.

Must be quite a chili restaurant to warrant a private security guard.

A lot of resaurants have security guards hang around at night when they close because of the money being counted and locked in their safes.

The pic of the vest.

That isn't much of ding on that vest. I wonder what caliber the bullet was. Looks like that guard was really lucky. If it had been a couple of inches more to the left he could have been seriously injured. And free publicity to US Armor too. Maybe the guard will get lucky and get a new vest for free.

Pleasant Ridge is not the most "pleasant" part of town and Avondale is almost the worst. Many chili parlors are open until 4:00 amso they get the "after bar closing" crowd.

probably didn't charge the perp until the ballistics come back to match the gun to the bullet. once confirmed you will probably see the attempted murder charge added.

Disclaimer not a lawyer but this just seems to make sense to me. I am sure others will no better

I wonder why no attempted murder? Maybe they couldn't figure out who the shooter was?

...thanks to a protective vest.
You know, it started off really nice and all, then:
But Dawkin's bullet-proof vest saved him.
Gotta love the buzzwords and ignorance.:banghead:

Last time I checked, the smallest thing this side of bullet-proof was a Sherman or the M-48 Patton MBT. Whoda thunk that MBT's were man-portable now? Gotta get me one of them bullet-proof vests. Anyone got a price check on one of those? Will it stop anything 20mm and below at less than 5 feet without serious damage?

I wonder if the vest belongs to the security guard, or if it was issued to him by his employer?

In any case, I think that the vest's maker should give him a FREE replacement vest.

:D :D :D

Free? Because he forgot to duck?
I don't think that the company has any real obligation to give him a new one, but the publicity can't hurt them.
