Saw one of the new CZ 550 Magnums, with the new American stock. This was one of what CZ USA calls their "Fancy" or "Exhibition" grade stocks.

DISAPPOINTING. The wood was fairly ordinary. The grain was a little better than a standard factory stock from someone like Winchester, but only a little. There was more grain. The stock had a lot of tiny little holes all over it - similar to little pin-pricks. These were not an intention design aspect - they were not in a mannered pattern, it was a defect.

Also, the checkering was a major disappointment. It looked like it was done AFTER the stock was finished, so it took a lot of the finish off the checkering area and it looked yellowish. The borders of the checkering did not meet evenly. They overan each other.

Also, no crossbolts in the stock.

The action and barrel is no different. It's still the same finish.

Now, the reason I'm being so harsh in my evaluation of this gun is, this gun sell for about a $600 PREMIUM over the standard grade 550 American. For $600 extra, for a "Fancy/Exhibition" grade stock, I was very disappointed. I expect CZ will get a lot of complaints from people buying this rifle.

After also finding out that CZ will be offering their .458 Lott with "Win Mag" literally "X"-ed out on the barrel, I've decided to just have my .375 and .458 CZs restocked and have the Win Mag rechambered to Lott.

Just FYI,
Steve

Having the Winchester marking XXX d out on the barrel is probably
a prototype thing. The gun as shown in Guns & Ammo was one of
the first Lott chambered rifles.

I don't hunt Africa or Alaska, so a .375 or .458 doesn't appeal to me.
What has me excited is a stainless/wood CZ Model 3 in .270 WSM!

CZF,

I don't think it's a protoype thing. I called CZ USA and asked CJ and he said they were going to be marked like that.

I'm curious as to who is making those stainless guns for CZ. I have no interest in the caliibers, though.
