Saw some Unique on the shelf yesterday

I would love to find primers for $22 a brick! I've only been reloading a few months now using Lee Classic Loaders for 38/357 and 9mm. I was finally about to move up to a press but with all this talk about shortages I decided I was better off stocking up on components. I just paid $70 for a brick of small pistol. I need to get more powder too but I have no choice but to build up my stock slowly at one or two different items a week hopefully before things get bad.
Surprisingly the little Lee Loaders aren't too bad, I reload in batches and while it's not as fast as a press I can get things done pretty quick. I'll take an hour before or after work, deprime and size cases then clean em one day, the next day I prime cases, then I finish off the next day. In about 3 hours altogether I can do about 180-200 rounds. I could probably do it faster if I really tried but I like to be careful and examine everything.

Temptation got the better of me, so went back for it. That is 8 pounds of BE-86 and I got the last one at that price. They have several more, but there had been a price increase. Those other stickers were $214. They seemed happy to see it go as they had been sitting on it awhile.

Is there anything that is close to being a grain for grain replacement for pistol loads? I'm down to my last two pounds of Unique.
If you insist, no. There isn’t. Learn to be flexible. There are plenty of powders for pistol loads as good or better than Unique. Unique does have the ability to fill up a 9mm case to where a double charge will overflow it where a dense powder such as Titegroup can be double charged without overflowing

Typical readily available pistol powders of Unique's performance are W231/HP-38 (same powders), AA#5, Universal (Hodgdon's version of Unique), lots of load data that will get you equivalent velocities with less smoke and less soot than Unique.

A while back, I loaded some test loads of old vintage Unique and Herco to see if those older powders were still good. Both bulky flake powders. Finally got to shoot them yesterday and both went BANG. Chrony was acting eratic, but as near as I can tell, about 0.2 grains more Herco than Unique gave same outcome. So that is about as close as it gets.

And as of a few days ago, Herco was available at Grafs in both 1 and 8 pounders.

Have a look at Hodgdon “Universal” powder. It’s very similar to Unique, but it’s not a “grain for grain” match. Nothing is.
I started using Universal 6 or 7 years ago when we had another run on things due to some BS…Never mind. Not important.
Take a look at Universal. It’s a good powder and it burns cleaner than Unique.

I was in my local Cabelas today quite a few primers AA Hogdons Winchester powders they don’t carry Alliant powders there that I have ever seen. 8lbs Hogdons extremes line 379$

Wow! $48/lb in bulk? Is that out the door or sticker price?

Sticker lol I left them behind, did bite my tongue grab another 1k cci 41s 79$
Well, at least you have the option. I guess that’s something.
Are the Extremes still in product ion? There was a post not long ago that they are already eco-friendly but I haven’t been able to confirm that.

Loaded some 9mm practice rounds today using both Unique and Herco. Following some test load ladders, I went with 5.1 grains of Unique. On a lark, I wondered what would happen if I used same powder measure setting with Herco. It turned out to be 5.3 grains of Herco, which upon review of my chrony data, is nearly the same velocity. Both have nearly identical volume and give me about 105% case fill.

Unique has it's cult following. Now wondering where is the love for Herco?
