I have wanted an accurate .308 bolt gun for awhile. I'm not interested in competition. I gifted my .300 mag to my son in law 5 years ago and he wants to put together an elk hunt. Probably Washington state, probably my last out of state hunt. I'm trying to put together one rifle for both purposes.
I just bought a tikka stainless with laminate stock, free floated barrel. I'm looking for a scope of decent quality. Budget is $600 top end. Also thinking illuminated if possible. Maybe leupold VXR firedot ballistic reticle or trijicon accuscope with the mil-square reticle or something.
Anything else I should look at?
Is my quest unreasonable? Am I asking 1 rifle to do too much?
Thanks

The VX-III's were replaced years ago with a much improved VX-3. Good scopes, but these would be my choice.

They are made in the USA by Meopta and sold under the Cabelas brand. The 3-9X40 version is the exact same scope that Zeiss used to sell and was labeled as their Conquest model. Zeiss no longer carries that scope, but it is still being made and sold here.

I have one of the original Zeiss Conquests on one rifle. I found one of the above scopes in Cabelas Bargain cave last summer for $250. It was slightly used and had been returned, but works perfectly.

If you choose Leupold, also a very good scope, I see no reason to go any more expensive than the VX-2. They are around $300. The VX-3 is better, but priced closer to $500, not $200 better.

You won't need an illuminated reticle.

vortex

vortex scopes are a hell of a good deal, and good glass.. you can get a great scope for $600 green backs..

jmr40, I wasn't aware there was a difference between the vxiii and vx-3 very good to know. I second your recommendation of the vx-2 as I have the mark ar mod 1 which is supposed to be the same thing plus exposed turrets.

Well, I ordered a Leupold scope from LensAndLasers. Did NOT get illuminated but I did get a great deal with the $100 Leupold rebate on a VX-3 3-9x40mm. (just over $350 after rebate) I think it will serve my purpose just fine. If it hadn't been for the rebate, I might have gone with a VXR ballistic firedot.
I've bought from LensAndLasers before and I recommend him (online 1-man shop). I have no other connection to the business.
Now I still have to find rings because I hate the silver ones that came with the stainless Tikka. (The optilock seems OK but not the silver.)
