I have several AR-10 and AR-15 rifles with scopes mounted on a flattop receiver. My problem is lack of finger clearance to get a good purchase on the charging handle. By the time I get the scope positioned for eye relief, the scope is sitting right on top of the charging handle.

Do I need risers between the scopes and receivers? Is there a different style of charging handle?

Ideas are appreciated.

Thanks...
Steve

Both......... I had to put a 3/4-inch riser on to get proper eye relief on mine an extended charging handle. Both are available from Brownell's.

You have a couple of options, but an extended charging handle latch is the easiest and cheapest option. You just pop out a roll pin on the charging handle and swap out the latch. I run a Badger Ordnance on my scoped Mk12 SPR variant. I run BCM Gunfighters on all of my other carbines (they are much more rigid than the standard AR charging handle). The larger latches are designed for use with a scope. Do the latch first to see if that is enough. If that's not enough, then go for the riser. Unless you are not getting a good cheek weld, keep your scope where it's at. Scopes on ARs tend to sit pretty high as it is, and you want the scope as close to the bore line as possible.

Yes, set the cheek weld and eye relief with a scope mount, then add a Badger tac latch if necessary to get to the charging handle.

I had the same problem and tried a few solutions. I can say without reservation that the BCM Gunfighter is the best way to go.
