I didn't want to spend big bucks putting a scope on my flattop.
Also don't like the way 3"-4" eye relief scopes block access to the charging handle with their ocular bell.
Mounted a 5" eye relief shotgun scope (1.5x-4x) as far forward as possible using only the receiver's rail. (no handgaurd rail)
Success... the eye relief was great with the ocular bell just a tiny bit forward of the charging handle, which is what I wanted.

I'll post a pic soon..
didn't want to start a scope-bashing war so didn't mention which one.
bushnel 1.75-4x32mm shotgun scope. Cheapie, glass is just OK but the outcome seeked was low power for target acquisition speed, and EER to clear the charging handle.

There is noting wrong with having a shogun scope on an AR. I have a Mueller 2-7x32 "multi-shot" scope on one of my AR's. It has a illuminated 1MOA red dot in the center, and and outer circle. The outer circle was designed for use with shot type loads fired from shotguns, for example when turkey hunting. The circle will cover 15″ @ 40 yards on 2× magnification. Between the red dot and the outer circle this scope is quick to get on target.

LER scopes are what scout rifles are all about, and a great match on an AR. Plenty of articles out there on setting up a scout with pistol scopes, precisely because the older actions would not allow getting it back over the bolt.

The AR is somewhat the same, the eye relief forces forward mounting if you shoot nose to the charging handle. Most scope mount makers have a cantilever mount that gets the front ring past the delta to help things fit better.
