Scope for Hunting rifle?

Ive played with exactly ONE of those, again just setting up a buddies gun. Setting up the scope was easy, and really besides the thick crosshair (necessitated by the drop compensation led), and RELATIVELY poor glass, Its an accurate and easy to use system once set up and dialed in, especially with a spotter.
(going from what i remember)
The scope works by connecting to the range finder, so if your phone ISNT present it runs off of stored data. If your device is present and the app is running it will pull data from the outputs of the app.
The thing does work, and is pretty reliable from what Ive seen and been told.

Its not fool proof tho.

My buddy is relatively new to both hunting and shooting, and by that I mean he's really only got seriously into it in the last 5 years or so. After I set up his rifle, the next time he took it out was hunting on another island, and proceeded to miss a bunch of shots. Many of which he probably wouldn't have if he had one of his regular rigs. His issue was trusting the scope's holdover compensation, but his inputs werent correct. After he got back, another friend of ours who is much more experienced with using a ballistic app and shooting distance went thru it with him and fixed the problems.

The system also only compensates for the easiest thing TO compensate for. Drop is the one thing that's close to constant, and might as well be out to 500yds or so. With modern high-intensity cartridge trajectories, MOST guns with a 200-250yd zero will only show something like 3-5moa above/below POA out to 400yds, and 3-7@500.

That isn't to say that its NOT a good system or helpful, but personally my major nemesis is wind drift, even at the relatively short distance of 300-400yds. Ive completely missed more than one sheep, and a pile of targets on Maunakea because I've fired directly into a sudden strong gust I didn't know was coming until it blew me sideways.

I would also rather have to remember which stadia to use, or how many clicks to add/subtract, and get the slight but noticeable glass improvement, and slightly less bulky scope.

Again personal preference, my previously mentioned buddy loves his, and has taken some animals at well beyond what Im comfortable with simply because his SCOPE new his drop tables, and all he had to do was make the shot, which is not insignificant.
So basically its crap glass with new technology...

Yes. Avoid buying Chinese.
While i dont disagree completely, I would say that the quality of Chinese optics is directly proportional to what the purchasing company is willing to tolerate in quality, and that rhe overall quality of Chinese optics manufacturing has increased.
Also Id also bet theres chinese components in 90% of the scopes assembled elsewhere.

I think that this is a true statement. For example, Bushnell Matchpro's are made in China and it's a very nice $450 scope. You're not going to get Swarovski glass or Nightforce internals but they can get in the ballpark if they want to. Another example is Stihl carburetors are now made in China and they seem to be as good as anything else.

You can't avoid what you can't avoid. China has not been a good and fair trade partner with us. To the maximum extent practicable I will eschew anything that is labeled made in communist, intellectual property thieving, reverse engineering China.

Zeiss or Swaro. i just ordered that same Zeiss. I am paying more than 750.
Maybe you are buying from Expert Voice?
I don’t like Expert Voice. They don’t deliver. if you have Leupold discount, I would buy a Leupold.

Strike the two Chinese scopes off the list. I don't know where the Sig is made, but it being new technology, I'll pass on it. That's a very good price on the Zeiss. The weight of the Zeiss isn't bad either for a larger scope.

Congrats on your Zeiss.

Red are finalists. The only one without illumination is the Swaro, and it’s the most expensive. Which one would you choose?

money not being an issue the Zeiss is what Id choose, seconded by the HMR. I dont have any experience with the Swampfox optics, or the Swaro, and the BDXs abilities arnt really worth the downsides to me.

I’d like to thank you both for the discussion about Athlon. Learning experience for me. I’m looking at getting Athlon rifle scope (Midas AHMR 2.5x15-50mm) and binoculars (Midas G2 10x42).

I really had planned on buying that Zeiss, but it was sold, and have broadened what I’m looking at now. I really like the ballistic turrets on the Swarovski. I’ve considered going without illumination in order to get Swaro glass and those turrets. I really do want illumination though. The Swaro z5 is 4x the price of the athlon. Not sure it’s worth it. Looking at value, and taking everything into consideration, what would you buy on this list. I can afford all of them, but does it make sense to put that $1700 scope on a hunting rifle?

I have only heard that Swaro is amazing. I am finding that the more you have to pay, the quality goes up exponentially. Example is my VX6 HD. It is extremely forgiving in the eyebox. The eye relief is basically unchanging. Very comfortable to use. Anything below that price point in my scope collection does not come close, including a zeiss v4. My MeoPros are close.

I just spoke to Doug at Camera land. Here is his info:

Doug took the time to walk me through each one of my selections, and then gave me a nice discount. I like the fact that he's running a family business that his dad started, and was so helpful. I'll be buying from there whatever I choose, probably from now on.

I'm now either going to bite the bullet and get that Z5 Swaro, or save $1000 and get the Athlon. I just need to decide.... I could actually buy another rifle and scope for the price difference, but I'm not someone who wants a bunch of rifles. My safe is already full. That's the point. I want a nice wooden stock, which I have in a .270 Winchester M70 Westerner (Leupold vx3 scope), and a nice all weather, which I'm currently buying. Makes me think that I should just go with the Swaro, but promise myself I won't just buy another rifle in 12 months...

Glad to see you working with Doug. Those guys are a class act.

I went to cabelas today and looked through the Swaro z3, and z5. Then the Zeiss v4 and then leupold vx5hd. Through my eyes, the Swaro scopes were much more clear and crisp. Next would be Zeiss and then Leupold. I couldn’t tell any difference in the glass on the z3 vs z5 swaros. I’ll be buying one of the swaros most likely. I wish I could have been able to look through an Athlon Midas HMR to compare.

I would give strong consideration to the Tract. The ones I have exceed the quality the price would suggest. While $794 is not cheap, I've seen scopes that were not as good yet cost significantly more money.

I have an older Swarvo 3-18x44 Scope (non-illuminated) and it’s very nice. It’s lightweight and low profile and will never leave the lightweight rifle it’s on. I also have a Tract 4-20x50 Scope which is considerably bigger and heavier, and is on a bigger and heavier rifle. Image quality on the Tract beats the Swarovski by a long shot. Perhaps it was the weather during that trip (very hot and humid), but the difference was considerable.

Each scope has its benefits.
