Hi

I just picked up a ruger 77/44 and want to put a scope on it. I figure I'll only be shooting 100 yards or less with it. This is what I was thinking about. Leupold 2.5x28mm IER Scout. I think a fixed power will be good enough.

Thanks

Here's something from a description of that scope -

Designed to mount forward of the receiver, the special 9 inch eye relief allows the user to a fast pull into position without needing to focus solely on the sight picture.

I have a 77/44. There isn't a forward scout mount like on some of the Ruger 77's. You have provisions for an integral ring mount that bridges the ejection port, pretty much centered above the receiver.

I have a Leupold VXII 1-4X on mine. This works fine for close shots when set on 1X, and the 4X setting makes me think I might be able to hit something at 100 yds or a little more.

This has a more standard eye relief and will work better than the IER model.

dmazur is right in that you DO NOT want a scout scope that mounts forward of the reciever. He also makes a good recommendation. The compact 1-4 power variable is a great match for that gun.
In addition to the Leupold, this Nikon Monarch would also be good:
1-4x20mm

If you dont want to spend $300, you could try one of these options:

2-7x32mm

1.65-5x36mm

I agree that a lower power variable is a better idea. I respect Jeff Cooper but I just don't buy into the scout scope concept and it'll take some gunsmithing to get one on your Ruger. Though I do think that a peep sight is best on a pistol cartridge rifle.

i have a rifle set up w/ a 2.75x fixed forward mounted scope and don't really like it all that much. it does ok, but i have found that 1- for fast target acquisition i like nikon's red dot w/ its big tube and dot size it is very fast to get on target and has enough hunting accuracy for up to 200 yard shots (beyond that the dot is too big and not precise enough - you would need a smaller dot, thereby destroying close range speed).

my close range guns have been transitioned away from traditional scopes. most of them use peep sights now, and the ones that don't use peeps use the nikon red dot. if you go w/ a red dot set up i'd caution you to stay away from the small tube models, or to at least look thru them very hard first. they may not be near as fast to get on target as you might think.

i put a burris 4x mini silver scope on mine and it works ex. eastbank.

i don,t think they make the compact silver 4x(4x-20) any more, but the 4x20 blue burris timberline looks like it. i got mine several years ago and put it on the ruger 77/44,i bought my 77/44 several years ago,it is not one of the new ones. you may find one used at a gun show or on the internet. eastbank.
