I have a Marlin 17HMR bull barrel, bolt action rifle that I've had for some time. First scope I put on it was rather a cheaper one but at the time I didn't want to take one off another rifle. Last night before bed I put one of my better scopes on it, pulled out a BSA Bore sighter and had issues trying to get the windage adjustment on the grid. I know that this bore sighter is not the best in the world but most times it will get me on paper and then can go from there. Today it took me around 5 shots to even see it hitting anywhere close to the back board. Had to hold the scope about two feet to the right and with two targets side by side I was hitting in the 8-9 ring on the left target. Started turning the adjustment and after running completely out of any more adjustments. Elevation was right on but didn't want to waste more ammo chasing the target.
Came back into the house removed scope from the two piece mounts, put level on it and the front one was tilted way to the left. Put a straight edge and both line up great, I took front mount off and shimmed up the right edge to bring both mounts to an even keel. Mounted a different scope and pulled out the bore sighter again, the scope was dead on for elevation and again way off for windage. After turning the adjustment in as far as it would go I finally got it centered. But for some reason I don't feel that this is going to be the final fix for it. What am I over looking, at this point I am looking at changing the 2 piece mount for a single piece that might keep everything inline. Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
