I am mounting a scope on my new X bolt rifle. One-piece ring/mounts are Talley, the OEM manufacturer for Browning.

When I install the two front most screws in the through-holes drilled in the receiver, they bottom out against the barrel's threads before the mounts are pulled up tight against the receiver.

Without the mount installed the screws will achieve 2 3/4 threads of engagement when they bottom out against the barrel. It can't be a case of holes not being drilled deep enough as they go all the way through the receiver, but then are blocked off by the barrel when it is screwed in.

When attempting to attach the mount, after the screws bottom it appears the screws would need to turn about 1/2 - 1 turn more to pull the mount tight to the receiver.

The other 6 screws all tighten up fine and have much more thread engagement.

My thought is that since thread engagement is minimal in this design, that they err'd on the side of making the screw a hair long rather than a hair short and therefore increasing the risk of pulling threads out.

My thought is that I should probably just remove a tiny bit from the end of the two screws and call it good, but I would like to hear from other guys who have mounted scopes on X-Bolts first to make sure my issue here isn't unique or that I am overlooking something.

Interesting. A few weeks ago I mounted the same rings on my new X-Bolt without any issue. I wonder if perhaps a couple of the screws were just out of spec.

This might be a obvious question but have you tried switching the screws around and seeing if those screws might work in any of the other holes?

No experience with an X-Bolt, or Tally bases.

But it's not at all uncommon to have to shorten supplied screws on some rifles, and some mounts.

That's what I'd do.

Or, call Tally and ask them WTH is wrong??

Yea, that's the ticket!!

Tried but they are on the east coast - close already... really hoped to get mounted tonight and shoot tomorrow as I got the day off!

I also have mounted Talley Lightweight one piece mounts on an X bolt and didn't have any problems. I wish I could remember if two of the screws were shorter...I do remember that other rifles and bases have had shorter screws up front.

I would do as you say...shorten the two screws until they tighten up.

That's one cool thing about X bolts...8 screws instead of 4.

So I filed about 3/4 thread length off the screws and all went together well. The rings lined up perfectly with no lapping.

Wow, what a nice rifle (long range hunter in buckhorn tan, 7mm RM). The muzzle brake works well and accuracy looks like it will be good with the one and only load I tried while zeroing the scope (Leupy 3.5 x 10 x 40 CDS VX-3). Trigger is clean and about 5 pounds as delivered. Fortunately it is adjustable.

Love the slim stock. Actually the stock is the only reason I bought it over a Winchester M70. The M70s use a cheek piece on the stock that doesn't fit my face comfortably at all.

I have the exact same scope as well and have been happy with it. Need to tweak my load a bit before I get my custom dial.
