I just put a 4-16x42 scope on my 7mm rem mag rifle, a dollar bill drags going between the scope bell and barrel. Wondering if a hair width of room is enough? Bolt handle just clears but it clears. I would hate to move up in rings since I would probably have to build up the stock to get a cheek weld back.

Stuff flexes when fired. Google up some slow mo of a rifle being fired. A dollar bills width is probable okay, but there may be some contact. May or may not hurt it. Probably not enough mass to do any serious damage, but over time the scope may fail. Leupold makes a scope with a semi-circlular cut out in the bottom of the objective for just such situations. It may be possible to find a set of scope rings a few thousandths taller, rather than stepping up a whole size.

Well ya I would just put taller rings on if I need to but it sounds like I should be alright. Scope that came on the rifle 30 some years ago was a Leupold M8 4x with low rings I think. A few years ago I put a Vortex 3-9x40 on the rifle which fit but there wasn't a lot of room between scope an barrel. Since Utah took the scope power restrictions away for muzzleloaders I decided to put the 3-9 on the muzzy and picked up the 4-16 for the 7mm.

That is too close for me. If you could easily slide 2-3 sheets of paper I'd be OK. But if a dollar bill touches, your barrel is going to touch during recoil.

I wouldn't be comfortable with it. Easy enough to build up a cheek rest. Seems it needs to be done on most bolt guns anyway.

If you're concerned about it, you could always put a strip or two of electrical tape between the bottom rings and the scope to slightly increase the height. I personally wouldn't worry about it.

Well, that is about how I had my Mark V, .300 Wea Mag 's scope mounted, when I could still get my hands on a set of Leupold, Extra-low, Dual dovetail rings/bases, with a Leupold 3.5-10X40AO. It shot well, and the zero never shifted in years of trekking the USA hunting and target shooting.

Mount it as you like, and as it feels comfortable. For me, I like an extremely hard cheek-weld, ergo, the lower, the better (for me). Test-fire it. See how it works. If you're happy, you're done. If not, get a slightly higher set of rings. Fit and feel and para(mount). Yes, pun intended.

I wouldn't run mine that close. If you are just shooting deer a couple times per year you will probably never have a problem. If you're going to put a lot of rounds though it or shoot small targets, I'd get taller rings

Something such as your problem truly varies on your gun and scope, and exact setup. To my rifle and scope it may not work. If it works on your setup, I see no reason to change it. :)
