I have had the good fortune recently to obtain both a Winchester Model 70 Carbine vintage 1938 and a NIB Lyman Alaskan 2.5X. Is / was there a scope mount that will not detract from the value of my 70 by drilling extra holes?

Thank you for you consideration.

If I were you, I would ask Charlie Jackson at Charlie's.

He might have one in his workshop somewhere.

Just pass by everyone in the front, they do not count anyway :)p ), Charlie is the gunsmith in the back.

Or shoot Sam an email, he may be able to help you locate a suitable mount.

I may go rummage at Charlie's, they've got tons of stuff in the back. I may also go ask Ron Peterson, but I was hoping to have an idea of what I was looking for before digging around.

Stith made scope mounts that required no additional holes. I recall the one for a M70 had a rear base that attached to the factory receiver sight holes on the left side of the bridge. The front went on the factory receiver ring holes. They also had one that extended way forward and fit the rear iron sight dovetail with a long tubular ring for a straight objective tube scope. These mounts are not terribly uncommon and you could probably find one on ebay or in Gun List.

Jim,

Thank you for your post. I also found out about Stith mounts on another site, so I'm in the hunt.

Much Appreciated.
