Well, I finally did it, and ordered my pair of Savage Rifles. I sold my other gun, and had a few more clams stashed to make the purchase.

a .308 and a 300 WinMag.

Now, I need to put some optics on them.

My initial plan was to go with Leupold VX-II scopes, with the LR duplex reticle. I compared them with the Nikon Monarch, and liked them both, with similar price points. I have read the feedback here and on other forums, and while Nikon has a great warranty as well, the general feedback was that Leupold was easier to deal with if you had an issue.

So, I wanted to put a 3-9x40 on the .308, and a 4-12x50 on the WinMag.

But then I started to wonder: Do I NEED to spend that much $ on scopes? I'm not a competetion shooter, I got these to hunt with. And, unless I want to submerge myself into the long range shooting sport, I suspect it won't matter. Besides, my 90 year old neighbor took Moose in Canada so long ago that I think Moses was still tending sheep. And, today's bottom tier optics blow his stuff away.

So, the dilemma is, at what point do I stop spending money to get the 'next-better' product, and just go out and enjoy chasing Bambi?

Right now, I sure like the price point of those Redfields, and I can get both a 3-9, and a 4-12, but both in the 40mm bell. Leupold makes Redfield, and I suspect they will be just as easy to deal with if/when I have a warranty need.

Anyone out there have some ideas or experience with the 'new' Redfield scopes?

I'd buy the Redfields.... Leupold warranty is beyond question the best.

But..... the actual difference in a decent scope that costs a hundred bucks and one that cost 300 bucks is minute.... some of the differences can only be proven in a lab...

40MM bell scopes are fine for hunting.... you may lose 5 minutes of hunting time over a 50mm bell.

I hunted for over 20yrs with a 32MM scope and you know? It was never an issue... I'm not killing any more deer now than I did then....LOL

Most guys buy scopes with too much power for what they're ever going to need....

On hunting rifles I never put more than a 10X on one... most of mine are fixed power scopes of between 4 and 6 power depending on the range of the rifle they're going on.

Scopes

I have a new Redfield 3x9x40 on a Mini-30 and after several upgrades on the Mini, I fine the Redfield scope to be very accurate and easy to use.

I have the new Redfield and it is a disappointment. About the best I can say about them is that they are about equal in quality to the Leupold Rifleman, but $50 cheaper.

The Leupold VX-II scopes are good scopes for the money. I have better scopes, but could live with the VX-II. I would not want to go with anything of less quality.

If you want to spend a little less the Nikon Buckmaster is around $200. The glass is probably just as good as the VX-II, but they are a lot bigger heavier scope than I like. For just under $200 I like the Burris Fulfield-II also. If I wanted to save money I'd buy the Burris instead of the VX-II

that guy like the vortex diamondback a lot more than the redfield, and the 4-12x40 diamondback is actually cheaper than the comparable power redfield. http://www.cameralandny.com/optics/vortex.pl?page=vortexdiamondback4-12x40

vortex has some pretty killer customer service too. but unless you're going to be shooting at near dark you do not need a great scope. I've had good luck with cheap scopes (though not everybody does) and Sky here seems pretty taken with the simmons whitetail for the price. scopes are like speakers, nice ones are lots better than cheap ones, but but even the cheap ones are better than the nice ones from 30 years ago.

you might take a peak at sightron too.

These scopes are a discontinued line by Weaver, made in Japan.

They are already well discounted and there are $50 and $100 mail in rebates on top of that. They are not Vari X III's or Schmidt & Bender, but the more moderate magnification models are (after discount and rebates) starting at $90 and $100 a piece.

Thanks for the input and suggestions fellas!

A little while ago, Midway had a special on factory blems from Leupold, and I verified that they do indeed come with a full warranty, as the blems were only a cosmetic issue. And... the price was right. Based on the feedback I received, (thanks) I chose to go with a pair of 3-9x40 scopes. The biggest comment that really made my choice clear (to me) was the idea that you're only going to gain a few minutes at dusk and dawn, and, you can't really hunt legally in those light levels anyway.

So, I got a pair of scopes for just a little more than the MSRP of one. I couldn't pass that up, and I was fortunate to find that deal.

Thanks!
