I don't know if this is in the right place so if not please move.

I am looking for a scope to go along with the 30-06 that I am shopping for. I will be hunting with this setup and also punching paper at 300 yards maybe more occasionally but I have to travel a few hours to find a range with more than 300 yards. hunting will be in the 25-200 yard range so I need something that will perform well at a variety of distances.

anyway is the adjustable objective necessary? I haven't really messed with them much since I have only owned 1 scope that larger than 3-9x.

does the a/o get in the way when hunting? To me its just one more thing to have to mess with before I pull the trigger. I am looking at the 4-12x and 4-16x range of scopes.

also the scopes I am looking at are the Nikon buckmaster, monarch, redfield revolution, and vortex diamondback.

The monarch is really a little out of my budget and I was all set to buy it last night from cabela's but halfway through the checkout process at 10pm the price jumped from $309-349 and when I asked about it customer service said sale ended and nothing I could do about it.

any advice on whether I need the a/o and which of these would be the best value. sorry for writing so much...

IMO, for hunting with a 30-06 at reasonable ranges and target shooting out to 300 yards or a little farther, a good quality 3-9X variable should be plenty of scope and there are some out there that are affordable and surprising quality. I just picked up a Nitrex from Natchez Shooters Supply for $99.99 in gloss finish that is very bright and clear with repeatable click adjustments. Easily resolves bullet holes on paper at 100 yards, works fine on targets at 200 yards. If you want one in matte finish, the price is $119.99. Mine isn't that far behind my Zeiss Conquest 3-9X and IMO, a little better than my Burris Fullfield II (another reasonably priced decent quality scope). I find Adjustable Objective Scopes are just the ticket for shooting tiny targets at long range when you have a rest and a lot of time to dial it in. And if you want more than 12X magnification, an adjustable objective or side focus is almost required. If you insist on getting a scope with more magnification, check out the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14X. I have seen them on sale online lately for around $230 or so. I have one, and it is pretty nice for the money. (Although, I think the Nitrex is a little better optically).

If you elect to order from Natchez, don't use the DHL Post delivery. Pay the extra couple of bucks for Fedex or UPS. The DHL is SLOW...

Check out the new Legend Ultra HD by Bushnell

I picked up a pleasant surprise yesterday for a new Ruger American. I was looking for a rimfire scope and my local dealer handed me a Bushnell Legend Ultra HD. It isn't a rimfire scope but it does have a Parallax Adjustment on the side and will focus down to less than 10 yards on 9X. It is a very nice piece of glass, super clear and cost less than $200 retail. I think I may have to get their 4X14 for my CZ 452.

I have the Vortex Diamondback in 4-12x. It's a decent scope that serves me well for deer hunting (maximum range about 100 yards or so). I'd be hesitant to say it's useful much beyond 200 yards. The glass just can't cut it much farther than that.

As for the AO, you're talking about the range (300 yards) where I'd start wanting one. If you have a good, consistent cheek weld, you can probably get by without it if you're willing to devote enough time to practice. Of course, if you get an AO, you'll need to practice to get proficient with it...

thanks 2ndtimer I looked at the scope you were talking about and then searched some for more of the nitrex scopes and a Nikon monarch mil-dot 4-16x42 popped up in the search. this is the scope I really want but i have only found them in the $420+range. and that's if they are in stock. the mil dots are expensive. they have them on sale for 329 so i jumped on it

Gonefishin';

I wouldn't go to an A/O scope for your stated purposes. I won't have A/O on a big game rifle for just the reasons you put forth. And, I haven't found it to be necessary in either my hunting or range experience. On a hunting gun the most magnification I have is 3.5-10X. Furthermore, I took a pronghorn antelope at 470 yards with my ought-6 and a 10X scope. Got it sighted in well enough to do that too. According to some I was just lucky I suppose, but you get that way if you practice enough.

I'll suggest you might want to do some on-line shopping at SWFA, Midway, and others. It's a good possibility that that Monarch you wanted may be available at a better price than Cabela's. I have one Buckmaster & several Monarchs, & to me the Monarch is worth the money. BTW I also have Leupold's, Zeiss's, Weaver Grand Slam, and even a Simmons, but no Burris. Ever hear of once bitten, twice shy? I wasn't smart enough to learn the second time, or the third, but now I figure I'm just that tiny bit smarter. Though poorer.

Good luck on your search.

Glad you located what you were hoping for. I hope it serves you well. Looks like a pretty nice scope at a good price!
