I am going to change some of my scopes to increase the magnification. I'm looking at the Nikon Monarch 4-16X 42mm with side focus. I am primarily a prairie dog shooter. I have a two 4-12 Leupolds and a 4.5-14x. They are fine scopes, but I can get the Nikon for under $400 shipped. A Leupold equivalent would be between $600 and $700. What can you tell me about the Nikon and do you have other suggestions? I plan to stay under $400 if I can. Thanks for the help.

I have the same scope with the Nikoplex retical. I use it on a .223 match rifle built on a AR type gun. I don't like the term platform. I have used it at several sniper matches out to 600 yds. I like the scope very much. I feel that it is under rated. You should look through both scopes. I thought that the Nikon was brighter and crisper. If you do buy the Nikon get the target turrets. They are around $60.00 or so. After my last match I returned to my 100 yd zero, next match came up to my 300 yd zerro and first 2 shots were Xs. Great scope for the money.

"Careful what you're wishing for, cause when you gain, you just might lose."

Mirage over a dog town on a hot day will make more power then you already have almost useless.

We shot prairie dogs out to 400 plus yards years ago with 10X K-10 Weavers.
And less.

Most hot days the mirage was bad with them.

Hey rcmodel...your warning is useful. Thank you.. I am buying a new rifle soon...a 22 Hornet so I think I'll take one of my current 4-12x scopes, switch it to the Hornet and try the Nikon on my .204 or .223 before I launch into too much magnification.

The trend is more power but as mentioned be careful.
I like weaver grand slams. Not expensive.
Though I have a burris 14 power that is all I need in Florida for sure.
