I'm having a custom FAL built The bbl will be 22" and very heavy, so shooting will be from supported position. Hopefully accuracy will be sub MOA. Maximum range will be 600 yds.
My current optic inventory consists of a Leupold 3.5-10, a Nightforce 12-42(mil-dot reticle, which I really like but it's too much scope), and a Trijicon 3-9
So far I'm looking at a 5.5 ACOG and the Elcan day/night hunter. I'm also looking at the HORUS system, but the reticles seem way too "busy"
I guess what I'm looking for is something robust with decent magnification, with rapid target acquisition and range estimation/Ballistic drop features. Price range is <$1500.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not yet available, but will be by this summer.
I believe it's the same scope as the old Nikon Tactical.
Good glass, 30mm tube, 1/4 MOA clicks, target knobs, robust, very usable power range.
(May require a 20 MOA rail to get to 1000 yards.) 600 yards is doable though, I would think.

A little exotic selection here. ;)
35mm tube, MP8 reticle, good glass, plenty 'o elevation.

Good scope, glass, but has a 1" tube and will probably need a canted rail to shoot really long range.

Are we getting close yet??? :)

5.5 ACOG You nailed it. Get the "full reticle” model.

The only suggestion that I would add is that you consider an ultra-long range scope (not expensive) for testing your firearms' accuracy off of a bench. I bought a BSA 36X scope for just that purpose. You need not invest in a Leupold for this. My BSA is nice in that the parallax adjustments range from 25 Ft. for pellet rifle to infinity. When it comes time to punch holes for range work...forget about it! It hold's its zero with my M1A, with my Wea. Mark V in .300 Win. Mag., etc. Then, I know my firearms' true capabilities.

Since I use picatinny bases/rings on all of my scopes, reddot sights, etc, switching out is simplistic. I still suggest the 5.5 ACOG for your on-going, daily applications.

Thanks for the suggestions. I wasn't aware of the zeiss option! I'll take a look at it.

Doc, how is your experience with your acog? Is it enough magnification? Does anyone know what velocity/load most bullet drop compensators are based on?

I'd also take a look at these guys, if u like "trajectory specific" reticles. I have 1 on an AR-15 that i just love. I think they make the best ballistic/ranging reticles going-- www.rapidreticle.com
