I just picked one of these up but scoped rifle shooting has never been my thing so I know nothing about optics. I grabbed an inexpensive red dot on my way out the door but I’m wanting a scope with fairly forgiving eye relief. Any recommendations for $150 or less?

Not far. This will just be something fun to teach my son how to shoot/safe gun handling. Probably just 25 and 50 yards.

I am really liking the vortex crossfire 2-7x rimfire scope I picked up for around $120 on midway. I have it mounted on a 10/22 and it's more than adequate.

BSA Sweet .22. I have a couple and been very satisfied with the features they provide in their price range. Comes standard with 2 turret options specifically for the .22LR depending on what bullet weight you plan to shoot.

The BSA Sweet .22 is my first choice for .22's. But, they're always sold out locally at the big box stores. I picked this scope up as a stop gap on this RPR .22 a while back and haven't gotten around to replacing it yet with the BSA. Think it was below $100. Figured it would be a parts item in the drawer in case somebody needed a cheap .22 scope one day. Green/Red option lighted reticle. Turrets aren't set up for a .22LR. I'm satisfied with how close it is to the barrel. I'll take it off eventually.

For little money, the Simmons 22 Magnum 4x will get you a long way. Lots of eye relief too. $55 dollars may be all you pay.

Do any of these mount directly to a picatinny rail? I’d be pleased to not have to also purchase anything else!

Your going to need to purchase some kind of rings in addition to the scope and the rings are what mount the pic rail.

If the rifle is a more recent production rimfire, they will often have a dovetail on the top of the receiver. There are rings that will clamp to that if you don’t want to add another piece to the system.

It’s a ruger precision rifle with a picatinny rail on top.

Most scopes that are decent enough do not come with rings/mount.

Some Walmart clamshell packs do come with rings/mounts. While I would recommend Bushnell Banner to be the minimal level of quality and prefer to suggest Bushnell Trophy line instead and buying rings/mount separately, I have started out with CenterPoint scopes with decent results for 25-50 yard shooting. Here's one that I would suggest at lower cost that comes with rings - https://www.walmart.com/ip/CenterPo...ag-and-Bdc-Illuminated-Reticle-Black/49772623
This will just be something fun to teach my son ... 25 and 50 yards.
I have CenterPoint 4-16x40 Adjustable Objective with quick detach mount and Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 with rings I can "Pay It Forward" to your son for our gun rights future.

Let me know if you are interested.

Looking at different size of scopes mounted, looks like shorter scopes will work with standard rings but larger/longer scopes may need cantilever mount to move the scope forward for eye relief. Although you have adjustable stock, if your son has shorter arms, may affect comfort of trigger pull.

So for 6-20x50 CP scope that comes with rings, you may need cantilever mount depending on the size of the shooter.

Would the Bushnell trophy mount straight to the picatinny or would I need different rings?

@LiveLife made a very generous offer and the Bushnell Trophy would clamp right down on your rail. With the picatinny, you'll find it easier to get the scope where you want it vs. the Weaver 2 piece base design that's been around forever.

If you don't take him up on his offer, I've had really good luck with Nikon ProStaff and there is a rimfire version. Think they're discontinued but still out there.

OP's son is 8 and both scopes will be PIF.

3-9x40 now for shorter length of pull and 4-16x40 later when his arms are longer and better practiced to shoot longer distances of 75-100 yards and still see bullet holes on target. :D

I have about 6 or 7 of the bug busters on Air rifles and 22.cal. Small, tough little scopes. Hold up well even for magnum recoil air rifles. Recticles are on the large size, but easy to use.I normally shoot my Henry with a Skinner Peep sight, but will some times put on a bug buster for when I need extra yardage.

That’s so incredibly kind of you. As soon as he’s ready to own his own gun these scopes will be his to put on his own rifle. I’ve been considering a Henry with a custom serial number but I’m also trying to determine exactly when he’s legally allowed to own his own gun before I purchase one for him.

My sweet .22 had the reticle rotate 45 degrees, not sure what caused it, had it mounted to a 10/22.

Not meaning to get off topic, but I cannot think of a better time in history to get into the Hobby of air Rifles. A great way to teach a youngster and a hobby that will like so many stay with him for a life time. Open, sights, Peep sights and then Scopes. A good quality Air rifle like the German made HW30/Beenman R7. Especially when 22.cal is not that easy to come buy and getting expensive. The ability to shoot in most back yards etc. And so much fun for adult and Kids.
