I actually watched this on the news the other day.pretty sad when someone who is sposed to watch over you is commiting crimes.being an ohio native myself its even worse because i have to live with them.

Our gov, Ernie Fletcher (R), has an appointment with the grand jury on Aug.30 that is looking into his administration's hiring practices. His campaign platform was "Clean up the mess in Frankfort."
As was stated above, party affliation has nothing to do with ethics. A crook is a crook is a crook. :barf:

yup, nothing I despise more than corruption of a official... seems to be ALOT of that here that isnt printed(especially with missing $$ and lost revenues).the finance director was recently busted in my hometown for stealing from the city..$$millions.guess what? We are paying for it.

Theres alot going on behind the scenes here that folks dont read, republican or democrate, As was mentioned earlier, take a look at the issues of gun control in ohio and the concealed carry laws.youll find the answer.

I don't care if it is fifty cents or five million. If a public official is dirty get rid of them. Upon conviction or a guilty plea they should be dismissed from office immediately. They can't run again either.

hey quit knocking getting your Ill class D for cash i paid my way thru college driving fuel oil trucks. got my 21 and over license from a guy named "Mario" for $500.00 in cash, met him in the back of a bar on Rush Street gave him a made up birth certificate and the money. Three days later I had my license a real license, and I was only 18 years old.

Got my carpenters journeymans card from a guy named Vinnie out on Western for $200 in cash. he had a stack of them in his pocket. He checked your name against a list and pulled out an old typewriter and filled it out while you waited.

Oh yeah... have ME buying them beer, Dick. THAT would float REAL well...

And who's to say that having a meeting with a legiscritter CAN'T happen without an agenda? A friend of mine is thinking of running for state office: if he wins, does that mean I can't treat him to lunch if I'm in Madison? Let's get real here...

"A friend of mine is thinking of running for state office: if he wins, does that mean I can't treat him to lunch if I'm in Madison?"

Sure you can. But you can only do so if he is the representative from your own district or, if not, that you do not have more than six (IRRC) contacts with him or members of his staff during a six-month period, and that you are not remimbursed for any of your activities, other than actual expenses. If you're from his district, and you are not reimbursed, you can talk to him 24 hours a day.

So, let's say your friend is from your city. You drive every week to Madison to talk to him about concealed carry, and you buy him lunch every time.

That's fine.

OTOH, let's say the WCCA pays you for even a tiny fraction of the time you missed work while driving to Madison.

Red Flag: you're now a paid lobbyist. You must pay an $850 a year fee, file quarterly reports detailing mileage, expenses, percentage of time spent lobbying, and a long list of other boring details.

Let's say that your friend is elected to the legislature, but he's from outside your district.

You can take him to lunch all you want. If you buy him lunch, and you've visited with him more than six (again, IIRC) times during the previous six months, you're okay as long as you weren't paid a dime for your time.

Take a dime, and you get to file endless paperwork. Unless, of course, you only spoke with him six times in six months while he was the representative for your district. Spoke with him more than the law allows? Go back to the Registered Lobbyist square.

Clear as mud?

Where things got a bit hairy was back in April of 2002 when we had that fund-raiser with Massad Ayoob as guest speaker. I made sure that all of the politico's there paid the actual cost of the meal, so we were above board. Then Senator Zien arrived with his wife, and I didn't know what to do. It would have been cheesey to ask her to pay the $35 to be with her husband at the dinner. Fortunately, somebody offered to buy her a ticket, and that somebody was not paid a dime by the WCCA, and had only contacted his representative X number of times.

People always say that it's the State Ethics Board that has created these rules, but I really think it was the legislators who did so, just so they wouldn't have to speak to their constituents.

Very insightful observation.

I firmly believe that these were comparatively minor transgressions. However:

1. They're still transgressions.

2. He has chided others in his staff and in state and local government for doing the exact same thing. Karma is a mother.

3. Taft is so amazingly spineless and inept that I...

4. Find it hysterical that he is being brought to heel on petty charges.

If the man did anything more substantial than Clintonesque twisting in the breeze, he would have a loyal base that would defend him against these minor charges (and he would have a bunch of enemies who would be chagrined that this is all the dirt they could find). As it is, close to 80% of the population thinks he should resign. If you stand for nothing, no one cares if you get gigged.

Good riddance. The man is a wanker.

Mike
