My brothers and I would like to take a trip to South Dakota next year to do some pheasant hunting. I know there are a bunch of lodges, etc., but we'd like to do it on our own. We'll have a dog, and we've all hunted pheasant before. What we're looking for are some good suggestions for places to stay and good public land hunting spots. We figure we'll just stay in motels and/or campgrounds. A couple of my brothers love to camp. Any suggestions? Thanks.

South Dakota Pheasant hunts were a huge bonding week for the guys in my family!!

We actually used to just grab a motel or campground, and then just knock on doors a little to find farmers that were willing to let us hunt their land.

Once you find a few decent folk, its easy to get invited back.
Especially if you drop off a pheasant or 2 for their supper table before leaving!!

Honestly, its been a long time since Ive made that trip, so I dont have exact locations off the top of my head. However, I dont ever recall hunting public land, most people seem to be fairly open to letting you hunt their fields as long as you come across as decent individuals!

Or, go to Central/Eastern Montana (around Lewistown or further northeast near Plentywood, tho the Dakotas are indeed legendary, but highly commercialized . . . and I understand, because farmers need to make a living, too) . . . land is on the "block permit system" and there are more than enough birds to allow a sufficient miss-to-hit ratio.

One of my friends is an orthopedic surgeon out in South Dakota. He wants for me to come out, visit the family and hunt on some of his patients' land.

Now, if I couldn't call on him for finding good local land, I would call some of the pheasant ranches out there, and ask if they have any "do-it-yourself hunts", and if you can pay to camp out in their back-40. There are several ranches here in Michigan that do have such.

Please let us know what you learn.

WHITE HOUSE INN, in Aberdeen, SD.

Make it home base, check in with the Sodak Sports Igloo just outside town for supplies, and set out each morning for a variety of hunts.

Will be returning the first week of December. PRICES ARE VERY REASONABLE. Last year, we paid $50 a night for a room with two beds - our party booked 7 rooms and our 5 dogs were welcome.

Either can hook you up with folks in the area who will take you out hunting. Not sure what folks charge - I'd suspect $150 or so a gun

Yes, you can get do it yourself hunts, but most folks are gonna want to head out with you - once corn is harvested, farmers don't have much else to do that time of the year and won't likely give you a discount on the cost to hunt their land. . . .plus you want them to join you. Its good bonding, they know the land, and who knows, you might make a friend (a friend with fantastic hunting land taboot). As to camping . . . last year it was 10 below the first morning we were there - for the $25 a night you'd end up spending on a hotel room, I'd think LOOOONNNG and hard before camping in that kind of conditions.

You can check out pictures of all the above (White House and Sodak) and the fantastic hunt results here.
