i have a 1898 springfield armory in 30-40 krag(hehehe i can't believe i got one :) ). i was looking online and i decided to go with the 220gr round nose. since the krag was loaded with 220gr, way back in the day:neener: , i figured why not. i will use it for black bear/deer and i will use the open sights. i'll try to keep it around 3" moa. the range will be 100yds (my eyes still work;) )and realistically around 40-50yds. i have never tried a round nose from seirra, but i used a lot of 150gr hornadys.

so i guess i'll leave it up to you... 220gr rn seirra or 220gr rn hornady?

thanks!!!

Open sights at 100 yards?

It simply doesn't matter.
Both are as good as it gets in 220 RN .30 cal bullets.

Pick the one you can find in stock somewhere.

And Bee Happy you got some of any brand!

I shoot a lot of 30-06 ammo and I load both the Hornady and Sierra 168gr Match bullets and unless I read the load card I couldn't tell you which one I was firing, they are identical in accuracy for me.

I know you are asking about their 220gr RN bullet but I'm sure the same holds true for those bullets as with their 168gr .308" bullets.

Buy the ones you can find or are less expensive. If the price is the same and both are available i would choose the Sierra bullet because I like the performance of the ProHunter bullet a little better than the InterLock bulleton game. (but probably only because I have used them more)

I've moved this to Handloading and Reloading since the OP is asking about bullets for loading.

If you can find both at the same price, I would go with the Sierras, but either will suit you fine.

I own three Krags, one original 1896 carbine and two "sporterized" '98s that I'm working on for brush rifles. IIWY, I would look at 165-180 gr. bullets unless you're really needing that long round-nose pill to bust through thick brush.

I'd re-think a 220, but just because of the felt recoil. Neither Bambi nor Yogi need a bullet that big either. That weight was only used because the powders of the 1890's wasn't good enough to get the required velocities.

My personal preference is the Sierra Pro Hunter, but like Arch said, they are both fine projectiles. And my opinion is based entirely on the groups being slightly tighter at 100 yds. from MY rifle, with optics, not irons, so results could be completely different for you.

As far as Sierra vs. Hornady, I'd prefer the Sierra's if going for accuracy and non-dangerous game. If loading a .30/06 for great bears, I'd prefer the Hornady as it has the Interlok feature and I've had good luck with them. But either are outstanding bullets.

However, for your Krag, most of them had the original front sight post changed out so they shoot poa/poi with the 180gr bullets. I'd try those first to see just where the gun shoots, as the 220's are hard to find and $$$ when you do.
The Speer's, Hornady's and Sierra's are about the easiest to find these days but aren't as cheap as they once were. Expect to pay high 20's to low $30 range for 100.

I'd personally go with cast bullets... I have a Lee .311"200gr RNGC that's 1.5moa out of two different .30/06's at ~2,050fps.... This would be hard to beat from the Krag... and price is right.
BTW; I'm using 36.5gr of H4895.

i'm gonna go with 180gr hornady sst. since its only coming out in bear season, ok a couple of days for deer:neener:. and next year it will have cast bullets
