Now I have read about several different kinds of 'pepper sprays' and such, whos main ingredient is....you guessed it.....peppers. But some people are not affected by this ingredient. The other 'mace' type sprays are a totally different chemical compound? Are there sprays that combine the 'mace' chemical or 'tear gas' type compound WITH the pepper type? What seem to be the most effective, most of the time, on most subjects?

(looking for something for wife to carry that has best chance of effecting the most people, in the WORST way.... ;) )

I have a DOJ paper somewhere that found that OC (pepper sprays) were 90ish % effective. The CS based Mace sprays had a much lower rate of success. I don't think the combos exceeded the pure OC. In most cases, the quality OCs like Fox Labs give good results from the literature. That would be best for the wife. That's what I bought for my family.

There is a tendency to overemphasize the one crazed psycho. The large majority of predators are looking for easy compliance and a 90% success rate is good enough as compared to carrying nothing.

I went Fox Labs based upon recommendations here and TFL. Gave both cans to friends though. Need to order more.

Haven't had to use them on anyone so can't help you there...sorry.

Yeah, I think Mace makes one. But I don't think the mixes are more effective than straight OC. The police changed from CS to OC for a reason.

I'd recommend a Fox Labs medium fogger, 5.3 million SHU solution, 2-oz can (www.selfdefenseproducts.com sells them). Just be conscious of the wind direction, and don't use indoors if at all possible. A note on spray quality--the SHU rating is the hotness of the mixture; percentage is irrelevant. A low-quality 10% OC spray will be far less effective than a Fox 2% spray, because of the Fox spray's very high "hotness" rating (2 million SHU is considered high; Fox is 5.3).

2 and 4 ounce Fox Labs sprays (see photo of fogger spray pattern): http://www.selfdefenseproducts.com/sprays.htm

main spray page (not all Fox): http://www.selfdefenseproducts.com/pepper.htm

Fox "Firemaster": http://www.selfdefenseproducts.com/fm.htm

Note on the Fox Labs 2 and 4 ounce sprays--the "cop top" ones are a bit quicker to use, but the ones with the flip top are less likely to have the button pressed if tossed into a purse. You and your wife would have to determine which would be the right choice there.

If you can afford it, picking up an inert training spray (identical to the real thing but with no OC in the solution) might be a good idea; she can practice on you to get an idea of how the spray pattern works, how wind/movement affect the pattern, and so on: http://www.selfdefenseproducts.com/inert.htm

Fox labs spray is very hot and very effective. I also like Punch II in that it is alcohol based and will light you up.
