I really want a .458 SOCOM upper and already have a lower ready to go. The issue is funds... I can't afford to spend 700-900 on another firearm.

I have three rifles I can sell to fund the 458: 1. Remington 597 in .22 WMR, 2. Savage Axis w/ SS barrel in .223 Rem, 3. Savage Axis w/ SS barrel in .30-06. Combined sales of these will fund the SOCOM.

The SOCOM can effectively replace the '06 and, in this area, I don't really need anything between a powerful .22 cal pellet rifle, which I have, and a .223 Rem. I have a nice AR in .223Rem/5.56NATO.

I MUCH prefer semi-auto and MUCH prefer modular designs so the .458 SOCOM is a no-brainer in that regard.

I'm fed up with overpriced rimfire ammo so unless I can buy WMR very soon for 20 cents per round then I don't want to keep the rifle.

What I like about the bolt-action rifles is their simplicity, reliability and durability. I'm not really a SHTF type but I do know bad things can and do happen... so reliability is of "some" concern.

Still... I REALLY want a .458 SOCOM that I can shoot suppressed, if and when I can afford the tax stamp and can.

I'll need to buy reloading gear for the SOCOM because I can't afford $2-4 per round for ammo so I'll need to add a little cash to the sales of the three rifles.

One last concern is that I like to use EXTREMELY common calibers... .223 Rem, .308 Win, .30-06, etc. and the '06 beats the 458 hands down. But... I WANT that .458!!

I'm sorry this is long-winded but...

WHAT WOULD YOU DO AND WHY?

I'd get the 458 you have stated as to why you want it and given reason as to why you don't need the other three if you miss them you can replace them all fairly easily so I'd sell if I were you

Keep your rifles, save up for the 458. Get a part time job if you have to. You'll take a beating selling common and low end guns like those anyway.

You would give up a lot of versatility selling the 223 and 30-06. Practice a little delayed gratification.

I can't work anymore due to health reasons and live on an extremely tight budget. I just don't have the funds to spend.

I'll still have a .223 with the AR so the bolt .223 is a backup. Although the .22 WMR nicely fills a void between a fairly powerful pellet rifle and the .223 Rem there's just nothing in my area requiring the need for overpriced rimfire ammo. Yeah, the '06 would be a loss as would be a .308 Win, if I had one, but the .458 fills that loss.

Financially speaking this is a matter of either/or... not a matter of more.

I would do it. As stated, three common and easily replaced rifles to gain something you really want and can't fund otherwise. You've made a great case that the rifles remaining, .223 & .458 will fulfill your needs, which I happen to agree with. Enjoy the new rifle!

I have the same delima going on. My wife was sweet enough to let me buy a S&W AR recently. And now I really want a 6.8 SPC upper. So I am parting w/ 2 safe queens to afford it. I wouldn't dare push her kindness button again this soon.

Heh, I already sold all of my rimfire ammo. Okay, I've received enough confirmation that what I want to do... is what I want to do. I'll take these to my one LGS and one pawn shop for offers. If they're anywhere close to what I can get off GB minus fees then they're gone within days and I'll hasten my search for a .458 SOCOM upper.

I think in all my life I've only sold one firearm and that was because it didn't shoot worth a crap.

My school of thought is when I come across something I really want and start to justify but don't have the funds, I save, work weekend/side-jobs, etc.

That said I understand if you can't work extra due to health reasons and have a limited income, and you really really want something... then do what you gotta do. Sounds like you've already made up your mind. Like others pointed out though, from a monetary standpoint, you're going to lose money on the rifles you're considering selling.

I won't take too much of a beating. If I must sell on GB then so-be-it but time and effort are worth something to me these days. FWIW, I'll not likely lose a single dime overall because the Rem 597 WMR is worth far more than I paid for it a few years ago. I'll lose some on the Axis rifles though. Overall, it'll be a wash.

To be honest, I don't want to sell any of them for reasons already mentioned but, if I want that .458 SOCOM, I have no other way to raise the funds.

I'll probably need to sell some factory-loaded ammo to buy the reloading gear I need for the SOCOM but then I can buy the bits I need to reload for my other calibers too so I can then sell ALL of the factory ammo. I'll come out on top there. The only issue is I can no longer trust myself not to err so I'll have to trade with someone to do that for me... I'll be a second set of eyes during reloadings though.

The non-scoped stainless version in mint condition with only about 50 rds through it like this one... probably about $300 plus shipping.

I assume you don't use the 3 rifles that you are considering selling. I would rather have 1 rifle that I really want and use instead of 3 that primarily set in the closet.

It took me over 40 years of shooting, collecting and regretting prior deals, but I finally made a pact with myself - never, ever sell one firearm to buy another. No matter how much you want the "new" one.

I don't really "use" any of the rifles I own. I shoot them when I can and I enjoy that. I'm buying firearms for if/when I really do need them. Not SHTF... but during future hard times.

sell whatcha got! to get whatcha want! who cares what we all think :neener:
Seriously, as gun owners, shooters, & tinkerers, our needs and wants, change over time.
When I was a youngster (20's) I always wanted the the newest, hippest thing on the market;
now that I'm half a century (50+) I'm always lookin at older stuff, half my collection is older than me. :D
