Not sure if this is the correct forum, so please move as necessary.

I live in Michigan, so I'm sure laws may vary from state to state, but can somebody tell me how to handle this hypothetical sale:

I am a CPL (CCW) holder and therefore do not require a purchase permit to buy a handgun in Michigan. If I sell one of my handguns to a non-CPL holder, they are required to present me with a purchase permit obtained at their local police department. I complete the form, take a copy and the buyer is then required to return a copy to his local PD. I now have a record indicating change of ownership, as does the state and local PD.

If I am selling to a CPL holder, that person is not required to get a purchase permit so I am wodering how ownership is transferred. In other words, what is the process to insure that the the owner of record has changed (with the state) to the new owner?

Does Michigan still have that "safety check" where the handgun has to be registered with the state? So if no permit to purchase are required because both parties have CPL, then go to the next step and follow that "safety check" requirement by bringing it to the cop shop and get it "safety checked"...er I mean registered.

Having just purchased a handgun in MI, CPL holder to CPL holder, I think I can help. Even though we (CPL's) don't need a purchase permit we still need to fill out the State Police form RI-060, Pistol Sales Record. The form is the same one that you (Michigander) get when buying from an FFL. One copy is given to the seller, one copy for the buyer, and two copies to be delivered to the purchaser's local police or sheriff. It is the purchaser's responsibility to get the forms to the proper authorities within 10 days of purchase.

I used this link from MIGunowners.com for instructions, and links to the online version of the RI-060.

And no, you don't need to bring the gun in to the local "cop shop" for "safety check" anymore, just the registration, I mean, Pistol Sales Record form. :banghead:

I will second this information. I actually keep the RI-60 pdf on my keychain flash drive.
