I have never sold a gun privately other than at a gun show and I am wondering what you all do when selling a gun. My specific question really is, where do you go to complete the transaction? Not to be paranoid but I really don't want someone coming to my house so what are some good alternative places to meet?

You'll probably have to check what your local laws are for private party sales.

As far as where to meet, a gun range is a good choice if convient for both parties. Maybe an outdoor area where guns and shooting are allowed (hunting property, for example) and aren't likely to cause a stir.

If you do it in a 7-11 parking lot or something, I imagine you'll attract some attention.

Most of my FTF transactions, with people I didn't know, has been at gun shows but I did buy a HK P9S from a policeman in a McDonald's parking lot.:)

A shooting range is good.

Before you even consider a FTF (face to face) sale, make sure that the buyer is a resident of your state and that the transaction will take place within your state. If those conditions are met, state law governs the transaction. This may range from simply trading cash for the gun, or it may involve having a dealer handle the transaction, or it may be banned altogether.

I strongly recommend that you make out a sales slip with the buyer's name and address, and get some ID to confirm it. If the gun later turns up in the wrong place, you have some proof that you sold it; otherwise, you can be under suspicion and become very close to the cops for a while, even if you never are charged or arrested. Conversely, of course, it provides the buyer with evidence that he bought the gun, protecting him if it turns out to be not quite kosher.

I recently made a private sale transaction at a gun show and the gentleman selling just wanted cash. I am a very cautious person though.

I made out a slip that had:

Buyer's and Seller's

Name
Address
License Number and/or social if on drivers license

Type of gun (serial)
Price Paid and Date

We both signed.

He did not want a copy of it though. I now have that copy in my safe. This all stems from an experience of mine where I caught a stolen gun through an FFL transfer from an FFL on GunsAmerica. Always keep records.

Thanks guys, I will heed your advice. BTW, in Az. there are no restrictions on private sales although I will certainly confirm residency and ID.

In Az 18 and Up, Az State Resident More Then 90days
Backround Check is not needed but i ask "Are You a Felon?" For Kicks:neener: You can always Stop the sale if the buyer looks shady though
A Bill Of Sale Is Always a Good Idea
Shooting Rage Is a Perfect Place To Sell
but i'll admit I Sold a Glock in a Circle K Parking Lot And When it was done i went in to the store for gas and the clerks were looking at me Weird Because the guy buying was Checking the gun Out in full View i found it ammusing but they probley thought they were going to get robed

Becareful out there, lots of ppl will try to tell you it's ok for you to do a FTF with them eventhough they reside in another state.
