Senator admits his recent anti gun proposals would NOT have stopped recent attacks

Common sense tells us do something but nobody really seems to know what. I don't think it's the guns, but rather a lack of self-discipline that has grown in this country in recent decades. We seem to have become used to authority and even have developed a need for it. I mean, witness our searches without probable cause (even the Canadians finally outlawed random testing), government access to encrypted phones ('just this once'), etc. When we don't have the opportunity to exercise self-discipline and good decision-making for ourselves, our precious self-control withers on the vine, along with any developed sense of judgment. Kind of like the old totalitarian communist countries where government made all the decisions and their citizens failed to develop as fully as they could have. Functioning in a society with as many liberties as we have is challenging for such people who can't control themselves, it's like information overload. So these morons respond by desperately seeking to bring authority on themselves in the worst way possible: running people over with cars, flying planes into buildings, you name it, it's not just guns. It's crazy: makes you wonder what they think they're seeing or hearing when they turn on a television or radio! Back in the old days most of us were at least smart enough to know when someone slipped a hit of acid in our koolaid, but these days the kids will believe anything. No skepticism at all. And despite the xenophobic noise we've been hearing, most of these nuts have been domestics. Guns aren't the problem IMHO, it's a mental health and socialogical issue and the filibustering gentleman you're referring to probably knew this, too.

Spitballer, no matter what the perception, this chart shows us that we are now back to the homicides levels of long ago 1950, and twice as safe as we were in 1980.

Between cable, the internet and social media we now are informed of every drive by event to every large tragedy that occurs in America.

What were once just local events now are known to all. So the frenzy and paranoia build. There seems to be no way to stop it. Other than constantly pounding away with the truth. Like this chart.

Deaths by homicide per 100,000 resident population in the U.S. from 1950 to 2014

This statistic shows the death rate for homicide in the U.S. from 1950 to 2014. In 1950, there were 5.1 deaths by homicide per 100,000 resident population in the United States.

I should add that this was great reporting by Jon Karl of ABC and a great post by Onmilo, bringing this event to our attention.

Thank you!

Unfortunately, this is posted on a liberal watchdog blog. I haven’t found any coverage from the major news media (surprise). However, the filibuster received considerable coverage.

The key here is to know how your senators voted on the bills. That’s where the real pressure should be placed.

Not surprising given the fact that they don't give a damn about shootings in general or shootings of gays in particular.

If 49 people had been hacked to death with machetes, he wouldn't give a damn.

This isn't about protecting ANYBODY. It's about maliciously disarming INNOCENT people and making them VICTIMS.

levels of long ago 1950, and twice as safe as we were...QUOTE]

..no doubt about it, and I have no problem with law and order. But it's unrealistic to expect to get conscientious adults from people who are treated like children. And FWIW I'm not so sure we're any safer abroad, especially if we insist on pursuing such "tools" as offensive cyberweapons, despite almost universal international condemnation. IMO Ike would have been appalled.

This is not news, especially to our politicians. It's the perception they're doing something, not the actual results, that matter.

Most politicians are not stupid; misguided, unscrupulous, self centered yes, but not stupid. They know nothing will become of these laws, but the public will perhaps think they're doing something, that's all that counts. Especially if it gets their names in the media.

It goes towards their number one reason to be, being re-elected, which is all the reason they need, and all that matters.
