This Senator gets it. Too bad he can't teach McCain and a bunch of these other, supposed "conservatives".

Thank you for contacting me about federal firearms laws. I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this matter.

It is essential to safeguard the law-abiding citizen's right to own and use firearms designed for legitimate purposes such as hunting, target shooting, collecting, and self protection. Restricting this right runs counter to the intent of our Founding Fathers, who expressly guaranteed that citizens would retain the right to keep and bear arms.

As a former Texas Supreme Court Justice and Attorney General, I have firsthand knowledge of crime-fighting policies that work, and I believe that citizens' Second Amendment rights should not be restricted because of the actions of criminals. Rather, we must respect the rights of law-abiding citizens and focus our attention on the source of violent crime: criminals who use firearms to commit crimes. I believe that strictly enforcing the law and meting out longer sentences for career criminals and those who use firearms when committing crimes will reduce crime much more effectively than gun or equipment bans.

I appreciate the opportunity to represent Texans in the United States Senate, and you may be certain that I will continue working with my colleagues to uphold our Second Amendment rights. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

Sincerely,

JOHN CORNYN
United States Senator

I got this very same form letter when I wrote about the national reciprocity bill two years ago. Cornyn is politician, through and through, and I take his words with a grain of salt.

LOL. I knew it was a form letter, but didn't think it was one he used anytime ANY gun related topic came up. Thanks for the heads up.

Form letter or not I liked the response from my senator Chambliss when I sent him a thank you email for signing that congress 2nd amendment support brief.

Thank you for writing me regarding the right to keep and bear arms as guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. It is good to hear from you on this important issue.

We must ensure the rights and freedoms of law-abiding citizens are not infringed upon. Sportsmen, hunters, gun enthusiasts and citizens concerned with their personal safety have a right to own guns for these legitimate purposes. The ability of decent, hard-working Americans to own a gun, whether for sport or protection is clearly defined in the Constitution and must not be compromised. Only a government that does not trust its citizens would refuse them the right to bear arms.

Since coming to Congress, I have worked very hard to defeat efforts to erode our constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Rest assured, I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and I will continue to ensure the rights of gun owners will not be further infringed upon.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of assistance to you in the future. In the meantime, if you would like to receive timely e-mail alerts regarding the latest congressional actions and my weekly e-newsletter, please sign up via my web site at: www.chambliss.senate.gov .

Gets it, do he?

Only the law-abiding. Only if you do what you're told. And then only if it's the right kind of firearm. And then only if you wish to own and use the firearm for government-approved purposes. OWN AND USE? Hows about own and carry? Keep and bear, anyone?

He's my Senator, too. I know how he is. And as for Hutchison, she's just as bad. She thinks guns are good up to a point, but the little people need to be controlled.

I thought the same thing when I read it. "firearms designed for legitimate purposes" leaves a lot to be desired.

Yeah, but about the only purpose he didn't list after that was fighting a tyrannical govt.

If you want to hitchhike from NY to LA, do you turn down a ride because the driver is only going to Needles, CA? Same concept applies to political goals.

Whether you regard Sen. Cornyn as ideologically pure or not, he has been a reliable vote for pro-Second Amendment causes and that is really all I am looking for.

Meh.

Unfortunately it's all we can get too. The alternatives could be worse. We could have a Schumer or a Kennedy. I'll take Cornyn over that any day.

I agree that an understanding of and unwavering support for the Second Amendment is the first litmus test that should be applied to candidates for public office.

But it's not all there is. The other views of some candidates are why the Second Amendment exists.

Are you in Georgia Rhubarb? I know all politics today is about semantics but I don't see how a politician can be clearer. I get your dig about law-abiding but last I checked few of us have the freedom of the mongolian herd. Did you read ALL the statement or you just glossing over and confusing him with one of your local politicians?

EDIT. My reading comprehension was poor. Rhubarb wasn't commenting on Chambliss statement.

Why don't you call his office and ask him why he did not sign onto the Heller brief that Sen. Hutchison filed?

I asked when I called last week and his staff dude stumbled around and said he would check.
