Winchester M70 .270 Classic Featherweight. S/N G120XXX, only six digits instead of seven. All of the serial number charts come nowhere close. I know about the addition on the "G" prefix and the date as well as the advertised starting number, so far, no help.

The Classics with 6 digits are highly sought after and made somewhere between 1992 and 2000. Based on the 1st few digits I'd guess closer to 1992. Rifles with 7 digits were made after 2000 and quality was somewhat spotty. Most of the 2000-2006 rifles are just fine, but there is some risk of getting a bad one. The 6 digit guns are considered a safe bet.

There are no reliable online sources for Winchesters made after about 1968. You're going to have to refer to a printed source to be any more accurate.

I had one with a SN G148XXX that was made 1994 and still own one with SN G824XX made in 1999. Just for reference.
