Now you got me wondering on what I worked on that was so different.

Probably a Kimber Series II with a Swartz safety (which Colt tried in 1937 and abandoned due to WW2 and never reintroduced due to the cost). The Kimber rear sight does have to come off to remove the plunger and spring.
