This came out of another topic.

As for the other guy with the woman asking for help with a flat tire - COULD YOU AT LEAST HAVE OFFERED TO CALL A TOWING SERVICE for her?

She yells up you're not gonna help me? I said no

There's nothing wrong with being cautious, but some of you come across like complete... I won't say it, I'm just glad none of my neighbors are like you people.

My neighbor is ex military and he is 6 ft 4, 250. With a 150 lb german shepard. He also thought something wasn't right.

If I call a tow truck and it actually is a set up to rob someone and the tow truck driver becomes the victim, and I helped.

If I walk out carrying my gun now she thinks she's going to be a victim. If she has someone there that jumps me from behind, I'm the victim. Probably a dead one with my gun. I would have to put the gun down to help her. Not a good option for me. Maybe she could hold the gun on me so I change her tire.

Calling the police and staying inside worked just fine. If she needs a tow truck the cops can find her one. They do it for parking tickets.

One more thought. I wasn't totally sure it wasn't a setup until she came back with someone in a pickup truck to change the tire. Which was about an hour later.

She may not have had the money to pay the tow truck guy anyway. Probably didn't pay her cell phone bill either.

Of the three houses she went to...all had their outside lights on. Now maybe she thought we were all up waiting for her visit.

Maybe she felt safe going to those. Maybe she thought if they are awake they will help.

Mine and the neighbors lights stay on all night long for security reasons. Even with dogs and guns.

I'm not even changing my own tires. I'll drive 10 miles on the rim. I don't care.

The part that made me worried about a setup was the fact that I heard her talking pretty loudly. Turns out it was to herself but it was loud enough that she could have been talking to some unseen accomplice/s. I couldn't make out what she said just that she was talking out loud.

I'm not sure why the neighbor thought it was a setup, I'll have to ask.

so your neighbor is just like you? mores the pity for you both. size does not equal courage or character.

and weak rationalization and anonymous character assassination is real classy.

i hope i never reach a point in my life where i am that scared

i'll second that.

so many people feel that everybody they meet is a threat to them. i can't really understand it and it makes me feel sorry for them. i would hate to be so paranoid of everyone i meet that i can't even lend a hand to someone in need.

what if the girl you refused help to went walking down the road looking for help and was raped or murdered? would you feel responsible for her fate? would you tell yourself better her than you? you can play "what if " all day long there is always a what if that would put you in danger if you think about it long enough.

how would you know? you wouldn't even bother to speak to her other than to tell he go away.

if i had been her you most definetley wouldn't want to hear what i would be saying while walking away from your door.

if i see someone in need and am capable of helping i will help. what if it turns out to be a set up? that's the reason i carry a weapon.

At 3:30 in the morning she wasn't on her way to teach sunday school.

Hos, pimps and bad guys crawl at that hour.

Funny how 3 different neighbors ALL wouldn't help her. Maybe you live in a place where everyone is in bed at 10 and crime doesn't exist. No dopers and everyone drinks tea.

Crime happens here and dead bodies have been found blocks from my house in "nice" residential neighborhoods. I live in the real world. My car's be broken into. Houses have been robbed in broad daylight. Banks have been robbed. Bicycles taken from my driveway. Drug raids and hostage situations.

If she's not out at all hours of the night she stands a better chance of not being raped or killed. That's not my fault. Stay home like my old lady. Bake cookies. Read to orphans. Knit scarves for the blind. Or get AAA. I forgot about all the dead cops in the last year. 6 and one FBI agent within 20 miles.

This is the reason I train in fighting arts: to protect myself and those who need protection. To wall yourself up and cower behind the door is craven. I wouldn't be able to live like that, and I don't know how people can be so fearful as to deny aid to a woman in distress. Somebody needs to take a long walk and engage in serious reflection.

This isn't High Road...

We're not going to go off in the direction of near namecalling, sniping, nitpickery etc. It isn't productive and it doesn't help anyone.
