Shot a 16” AR9 tonight and had a hard time keeping it from swaying. I tried the extended left arm on the forend, right elbow parallel with body and extended out.

Any tips to being able to shoot these a little more accurately freehand?

Slide support arm back until elbow rests against rib cage (Essentially using support arm as monopod against ribcage) to maintain steady front sight for slow fire.

For faster target acquisition, point thumb of support hand on handguard forward and use it to index/point toward next target/point of aim. For more precise control for fast action shooting at multiple targets/points of aim, you want to work towards extending support hand forward on the handguard as demonstrated by Jerry Miculek (See 3:38 minute of second video):

For shooting drills on multiple targets:

I can't really add much over what @LiveLife did with those videos, but one thing to consider is something mounted to the handguard to help make sure you are gripping it at a consistent point vs, just sliding your hand to where you think it should be.

You can use a handstop, vertical foregrip, sling swivel, angled foregrip, really anything that is "permanently" mounted to make sure you are gripping at the same point.

Personally I prefer the angled foregrip and run one on all but one of my AR's and that one is a bare bones M4 style rifle with milspec round forearm but it does have the fixed sling swivel that I use as an index.

Practice with any technique will probably give you a little more accuracy.

What technique I use depends on what I need. In 3 gun I hold differently than say 3 position shooting, for example. One is better for speed, the other for accuracy but both can win their game.

Are you having trouble holding it or controlling it when firing? My experience with a Sig MPX was that the reciprocating mass of the blowback action rocked the gun considerably.

For years all my long guns were traditional type guns. Bolt actions, M14s in the Navy, Lever actions, M1 Garand, M1 Carbines, single shots. I shot a few ARs that belonged to friends. About 17 years ago I bought my first AR-15.
It was odd at first. I couldn’t quite figure out where to put my left hand shooting right handed. I utilized my sling to stabilize the rifle like I was taught by my Dad (Marine) and this worked for me until 2 shoulder surgeries and the removal of the cartilage in my left shoulder. Now I bring my left hand in and grip the mag well and this works for me.

It kind of does the u shaped rocking when holding and firing.

If you are shooting over 100yds find yourself a pole or rest of some kind if there isn't anything around go prone.
With practice it will get better, you can also use a tight sling to hold steady

If you want more stability for accurate shots using just body mechanics, the following helps me:
  • Use your support hand to pull the rifle into your shoulder/chest/clavicle (wherever you choose to mount the buttstock).
  • Rotate both of your elbows down and inward as far as you can (some call this "wringing the towel").
The second is not great for other shooting actions (like fast transitions between targets), but the combination above will help stabilize the rifle so you can make single shots more accurately.

Yeah, no "chicken wing" when shooting offhand.

Unless it helps.

Basically try not to disturb the lie of the rifle in the time between when you close your eyes, and when you jerk the trigger.

You just shot a 7?... No a 6?... Oh heavens! You gotta be quicker than that!

"Wringing the towel eh? - I kinda like that I'll add that to my list of reasons.
