How do they meter..?? I do not want to have to trickle .223 cases like I do with IMR4895..
H335 and WC844 meter so well I have a dedicated Dillon 550 just for that caliber. I set the powder measure to 25.0 gr and used LockTite to hold the adjusting screw in place. I haven't bothered to check the throw in several months now, after testing it for about a dozen times and finding absolutely no variance at all in the weight.
Bullet: Nosler .224 60gr Ballistic Tip Boat Tail
Primer: CCI #400 (SRP)
Powder: 24gr H335
Brass: LC '09
I need to get a snapshot of the target, but got less than .4 MOA 5 shot groups (measured edge to edge and then subtracted .224). This is off a sandbag rest. A slightly better bench rest and I might be able to shrink the groups a smidge more.
I too am a "newbie" regarding loading for the 5.56x45 NATO (NATO Chamber & Throat&Freebore).. Barrel ia a 20" Match Grade Stainless with Free Floating Handguard and a R.R. 2 stage triggger set in a CMMG Lower.
This thread has been very helpful & I appreciate the info....being in my 80th year, I appreciate any help & info I can from those that have experience w/ the 5.56...I have loaded other rifle calibers for years (so many years in fact, that I have some FRED BARNES--yep the Original Barnes Bullets 112gr .243; and some 180gr, 200gr & 250gr in .308).......but have never loaded for a gas-operated semi auto nor ever for this NATO 5.56.
Has anybody ever used any H-380, H414 or W-760 in the 5.56 and if so, what bullets weights. I have some of these powders and would like to use them up before getting into the Varget I have. I also have about 1000 Remington Brand 55gr (what look like FMJ w/ a very small HP Tip and a CONCAVE BASE.)....they also have a cannelure. Bought them from Midway (bulk) about 15 years ago.... They "mike out" between: .2242 up to .2246. Evidentally has been a discontinued bullet for a while. Thought they'd be good to use up as "blasters" with these "less-than-suitable-powders" and to "break-in" the barrel and get used to shooting this AR.
Thanks for any comments, suggestions or precautions regarding trying to use up these powders and bullets.
Montana Griz, I hope I'm still reloading when I reach my 80th! 760 is just too slow of powder for 223/5.56 because to get enough in of it the case it's a very compressed load. I know a guy who used 760 anyways and he had bullets trying to get away from the powder. (pushed out of the case) 748 is much better.
I use the same data asCanuck-IL posted in post # 8. I have two of John's rifles which I use to shoot NRA High Power. (both uppers shoot the same sight dope) I like Reloder 15 and Rem 7 1/2 primers to launch 77 and 80 gr. SMK's. good luck
I use H335, AA2230 or X-terminator for my plinkers and usually RL15 or Varget (about 24gr. with 69 grain Nosler OTM). I'm currently shooting 60 grain Nosler btips with 25.0 grains of RL15 or H4895, 23.5 grains Benchmark or 23.0 grains H322. The 60 Nosler btips reallywork well for me. Please work up.
Ok, there are some good looking recipe with positive pictorial results, but does anyone have tested !!not book estimate!! velocities from a Chronograph?
I have about 13 strings of 6-10 shots each of H335, 55g fmjbt. Average MV of 3020, std dev of 38 and typical accuracy of 1 to 1.5 MOA using mixed brass, 20" AR, 1:7 twist on a bench with a scope. That's better than I need for plinking so I am confident that when I am plinking off hand using the handguard peep sights, it's me and not the rifle or load.
A 14" M4 or 16" carbine would obviously have a lower MV.
I was simply trying to duplicate WWB and PMC Bronze ammo which were also giving me 1 MOA and were chronographing at 3000 fps.
With 69 grain bullets my bolt gun and Contender pistol perform best with loads that use Varget and V-V N135. My AR's like powders that are a little faster, like: 748, 10x, and H335.
