Friend recently bought an original Sharps single shot rifle stamped 1879 - Bridgeport.

Double triggers and very long octagonal barrel suggest a target rifle of some sort.

No remaining sights.

Extremely heavy gun-I'd guess 14-16 pounds.

I'm out way over my depth on old rifles-any ideas for further research?

The guys on the Shiloh board can help out with originals.

You will need close clear pictures and a minute description of all details about the rifle.
Call off all markings if not clear in a picture.
"Very long octagonal barrel" and "guess 14-16 pounds" is not enough to go on.
How many inches long is the barrel? What does it measure across the flats? What does it really weigh?

They will probably refer you to the Sellers book. It is expensive at $100 but that is not much against the value of a nice original Sharps.

Thanks Jim. My friend is age 92, doesn't drive and lives about 50 miles away.

I was relying on his telephone info.

I'll weigh, measure and photograph next time I'm at his place and repost.

Thanks again.
