i was planning on getting a 338 federal, but some money issues came up and the federal was not going to happen. while waiting around i came up with the 50-110 sharps in my tc encore. (MGM Barrels makes it). its going to be awhile till i get it, but a 27" heavy factory barrel with 465gr lead bullets and flex tech stock.oh yeah, a 3-9x swift scope. i guessing around 9 lbs, i think. now i know this will not be a 1000 yards gun. probably 100-150 yards, is all i want to shoot a deer/black bear. smokeless powder is going to be used, i don't want black powder.

what smokeless powder, be it pistol or rifle, would you use? it should be around 1200-1300fps.

oh, does the 50-110 sharps kick? like a 30-06 or a 338 rum?(please don't say 338rum, please, please, please don't say 338 rum!)

It will kick about 2 1/2 times harder then a 180 grain 30-06 load in a rifle of the same weight.

Or about like a demented stud mule on crack!

Those old Sharps rifles weighed 12 to 20 pounds for more then making difficult to carry around.

Smokeless Powders:

.50-90, .50-100, 50-110 Sharps

365 Lead AA5744 37.0 grains 1652 FPS
422 Lead IMR4198 25.5 grains 1194 FPS
440 Lead AA5744 33.0 grains 1418 FPS
465 Lead IMR4198 30.0 grains 1320 FPS
550 Lead AA5744 30.0 grains 1275 FPS

Those would be a few loadings, your velocities will vary. Loaded ammunition is available from a few specialty makers at around $5.00 a round. As to rolling your own? The Brass:

50-100 Sharps, 50-110 Sharps
2.491 - 2.497 O.A.L.
Originally designed for blackpowder, this obsolete vintage cartridge is again rising in popularity due to the advent of cowboy action shooting and Blackpowder Silhouette competition.
Box Size: 250 ($341.50) • 500 ($620.50) • 1000 ($1,176.50)

Not something I would get into with cartridges like the 45-70 and 444 Marlin out there but if it trips your trigger....

Also, not a cartridge I take to the range and send 100 of down range in a day. Matter of fact, my limit would be five rounds then an ice pack on my shoulder.

I shot a 50-90 once. The kick was similar to shooting a 12 gage loaded with slugs, 2 3/4" shells. Not pleasant, but bearable.
