Wouldn't put it past the little buggers, first they want to break your livestocks legs now they want to blow your horses foot off. gopher jihad. No wonder we have very spendy (MN term) rifles just for them.

Very worthwhile read.

Pity the "Pink Tribe sheep" still won't get it, and will continue to beat on the "Grey Tribe sheepdogs".

I agree with his overall caste structure of american society, but I dont think that is how it has always been. There was a time when most men were sheepdogs (or wolves depending on your viewpoint), and there was no need for us to be watched over. We watched over ourselves and our families and the self-appointed sheepdogs kept to their own business.

Where do most of the non LEO members of this board fall? I dont really think of myself as a sheepdog (too much of a busybody role for me), or a wolf (dont prey on anyone, or want to) or a sheep (a well armed engineer sheep maybe).

I should have been more exact in my opinions.

The true sheepdog would not do a pre-emptive attack. It would make itself known to the wolf and bark a lot, but would not attack unless it's sheep were attacked.

Iraq was pre-emptive, prior restraint type action, which is repugnant to the American Way.

You don't arrest someone with a pencil because they might write a dirty word. :scrutiny:

Remember the Ben Franklin quote about Democracy being two wolves and a lamb voting on dinner?

The second part of his quote being something about a "Well Armed Lamb contesting the Vote"? That's probably where most non-mil, non-LEO on this board would fall.
Whittle is quite eloquent. Read through all of his "Silent America" Essays when you have the time... or make the time to do so.

"You don't arrest someone with a pencil because they might write a dirty word."

Nor would many, if threatened with a dirty word. However, I must admit that, should someone with an announced intent to do me harm advance on me with weapon drawn, I would not wait for his shot before loosing my own. Pre-emption? Absolutely. But, yes, you could wait for him to cause you harm. That's what sheep do. Sheepdogs get mad that someone has gotten the jump on them.

So I made up an example of a prior restraint situation that I thought simple people could see as foolish. I guess the first maker upper of examples don't stand a chance.

So, OK, but what if he was wearing clown shoes, a big red blinking nose and a shirt dickey that rolls up and down like a window shade?

The example you gave is an example of the crime of assault. That is a crime.

Letting UN inspectors in and out and claiming that Iraq has no WMDs is not exactly parallel to your example.

Try again. :p

I guess the American way is what we did in WW2: Let Hitler thumb his nose at the Treaty of Versailles & the League of Nations, invade 6 or 7 countries and slaughter 6 million Jews & gypsies and have his Japanese allies blindside us before we do anything about it.

Thanks for the support.

If Wilson had not tried to make the world safe for democracy and Britain not have had the hubris to take 3 divergent and non assimilative cultures over there and create Iraq. I seriously doubt that any of this would have happened.

And all that should have concerned the average American exactly how and why? Well, it didn't. And that is why Germany lost 10.5 million, USSR 27 million, and the USA some 0.2 million. All-in-all, the previous strategy seemed to work just fine.

If you are suggesting greater involvement, know that there is a price attached, both in lives and in dollar signs. Most Americans are practical people unwilling to pay that price to fix somebody else's problems overseas.

Even the Sun shines only on half the Earth at a time.

You want to fix the world's problems? Commendable. Go ahead and do so by donating to charity, joining the Red Cross, etc. But, don't be dragging the rest of us on the same wagon by voting for globalist politicians.
