About twenty years ago, the unarmed first cousin of the county commission chairman here in Burke County was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy. The deputy was black and the man he killed was white. Family didn't say one word in protest. The family knew what their relative was like when he was drunk and they knew he was always drunk.
On the other hand, about twenty years before that...a member of the same family was shot six times in the back of the head, neck, and shoulder by two policemen-from a range of eighteen inches.
The local authorities had to call in the police forces for fifty miles around to keep those two policemen from being "released" from jail by the family.
