Hey folks!

What size flat-rate box would I need to ship a gallon-size ziplock bag full of .38 special brass? I'm shipping them out to a buddy of mine, but I have no idea what size box to get.

Thanks ya'll!

You need the size box that a gallon-size plastic bag full of 38 spec. cases fits in.

Hope this helps

The post office doesn't charge for the boxes them selves, but to ship them.

So you can go in and get one or three of each size, go home and try it and then bring it back ready to mail.

Get both the medium flat rate box and large flat rate box and see which one works. They're all free at the post office. The mediums are 13-5/8" x 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" or 11" x 8.5" x 5.5" and cost $10.95 to ship and the large are 12"x12"x5.5" and cost $12.95 to ship. I keep a few of each in stock at home and replenish them when I use them.

It's probably going to be the large flat rate box or 2 or more of the medium. Been using these for years but never the large. The medium is $11 anywhere in the US. I'm sure the mailman hated me, I shipped lead bullets, a box of 500 .45 270 gr was quite heavy.

I've had really good service from the USPS.It seems that the smaller the post office, the friendlier they are.Just go in and ask for a few boxes, but I think the medium will work for you.A friendly clerk can also advise on other methods,if they have the time to spend with you.If you are in a large city,it may be worth your time to drive to a small town,if one is near. Jcwit - why bother posting something like that? I know that I need a box big enough for a gallon-size bag of .38 brass. I was merely hoping that someone who's shipped brass before could give me a specific size, since I won't have time to go back and forth to the post office this week.

To those of you who chimed in with actually helpful info, many thanks. I appreciate a straight answer to a simple question.

I just take my outgoing brass to mypost office and pick out the box that fits. Little country PO and the post master is a shooter as well so he will even help me tape it up. Got brass going out and brass coming in at times.
The best one was when I ordered two 25# bags of shot and it was shipped in a $10.95 flat rate box.

How fast do you need to get them out? They will fit a medium flat rate but they will also fit a regional rate box & they are half the price. The kicker is you have to have a online account & order the boxes online which takes a week. Postage is cheaper online & you get free tracking(if the employees at the PO would scan it).

Have you tried leaving a note in your mailbox for your carrier to leave you some boxes?

Hadn't thought about it, but that's not a bad idea. Thanks. :)

Kingmt - no rush, I just didn't want to have to make extra trips to get the right packing materials. I really don't ship stuff that often, so I'll probably hold off on what you suggest for now. Thanks though.

It just seemed like the thing to do. Can't one have some levity in life at times without being so serious all the time? Loosen up! Life is fun if you let it be and more enjoyable in the end!

I think you'd have to admit the question as worded did open up to a questionable answer.

Live, Laugh, and live long.

JC - I can see your point, but I would have also appreciated another sentence of helpful info, ya know?

Levity is fine, but it kinda seemed like you didn't have anything of substance to add, so you poked fun and left. That's why I reacted like I did.
