Is there any federal law that forbids the shipping of firearms to a non ffl in state? If I buy/sale a handgun via private sale, can it be shipped the mail without a FFL being involved?

FYI, I live in VA were F2F sales are legal.

There is no state or federal law against it shipping via common carrier, but a non-FFL may not send handguns through USPS. You may also run into internal rules with UPS and FedEx.

Correct - no law against it. However, since the recipient is not a licensee, federal law requires the shipper disclose to the carrier that the package contains a firearm. At that point, UPS or FedEx will most likely refuse the shipment, as they will only deliver firearms to a licensee.

This is not the type of question one should get opinions on. Although they may of some help.

Do some more home work on the subject. Check with the carrier (UPS,USPS,etc)

Actually, it doesn't require notification intrastate (common carrier, not USPS). Read the statute again and pay attention to the commas.

Good luck trying to insure the package.

Just drive it over if you can. Traveling in Virginia is a joy to me.

No, there isn't a Federal law.

However, UPS & FedEx will not allow you to ship as per their rules, and it is illegal for a non
FFL to ship a handgun in the mail.

So, while it is =legal=, it's not practical.

No Federal law but some states require firearms transfers be face to face. Check your state law.
