i know there was a thread on shipping handguns to yourself a little while ago but i don't remember if it addressed long guns and i'll be darned if i can find it on the search function.

my question is this, i recently drove back to school and had a brain fart and forgot my rifle back home in illinois. i really don't want to drive the 10 hours there and back to get it one weekend and won't be back that way until late summer. would it be legal to ship the rifle from illinois(both me and the shipper have FOID cards) to myself in alabama?

It's your rifle, so no transfer of ownership is taking place. If he was shipping HIS rifle to you, that's another can of worms.

You DID package it up yourself and ask your friend to drop it off at the UPS pickup, right?

If the package is addressed as from you and to you, there should be little consternation on that topic. They may give him some grief for not being the same person listed on the return address, but I doubt it.

Whether or not you declare it as a firearm to UPS is another matter. It will cost extra for the overnight or second day service, but it is also much less likely to get stolen if declared properly.

Is it a rifle that can be broken down into smaller parts and packaged non-descriptly or is it in a big hardshell case that can't be disguised?

In the past, I've handed a box of small arms to a friend to ship from me to me in another state. It arrived fine. I took the precaution of using a shipping crate from a TV studio instead of a case that screamed "HI - I'm a Rifle!"

The FOID cards? I'm not really certain where that means anything to you. It might mean something to the guy who takes your package to the UPS office, but that's an oddball local regulation that I am not familiar with.

Of course, I am not a laywer, have no pull with UPS and ATF, and did not sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night....
