My nephew recently bought an X Bolt stainless stalker that we’re going to ship back to Browning with a couple issues for them to look at. Their packing instructions say to put the rifle in a cardboard box and send it with their package label. No gun case. My intent is to find a box as close dimensionally as possible and bubble wrap and paper stuff it as snug as I can. Any of you all done this before? Any tips or considerations? Seems weird and and mildly disconcerting to cram a nice rifle in a box and wave goodbye…

yeah....kinda a lot......both as a seller and for service or repair.
For the box you can check with any LGS and see if they have shipping boxes, either factory boxes or the over boxes distributors send out single long guns in. Packing wise I use bubble wrap, or the factory packing materials if I have an original box (same company or otherwise).

Another option, that adds cost, is to buy a cheap hard-sided case and either shove that in a box/make a box, or wrap in it brown paper with a lot of tape. If you use this option, i wouldn't expect the case back (which is why they say dont send one), tho it usually does come back.

Its not really that big a deal sending a gun out, ive only ever had one issue, and it worked out fine.

Browning says to not send a rifle case because they do not want to be liable for keeping track of the case during the service and trying to get it back to you. I get it… BUT… in general, I will still send the rifle in a case, because it’s often cheaper and easier AND more protective to buy a cheap or used case than properly pack it with alternative materials - and I just consider it sunk cost if the case doesn’t come back.
