Shooting a gun out of the car..?

Was watching TV, (which happens rarely as I don't own a tv, was at a friend's house) and some B flick was on; and in the scene, some guy and his girlfriend were being attacked while they were in their cars, of course the car stalled and died...

I didn't watch enough of it to see what happened next;

But that lead me to a THR question.

Although most of us think (and I agree) that most flicks with ccw's in it, would be about 5-10 minutes long only;

I have to ask... In that situation, where he is threated while he is in his car...

If it was you, would YOU fire your gun, from inside your car, (windows up!!) ???

I would think the noise level would be just about unbareable and even probably problematic, and I don't know about the flash level either..

I wonder if that would make me hesitate, or even shoot at all..

Your thoughts?
 
In Las Vegas, a few years back, a Cop had necessity to shoot a bad guy through the windshield while sitting in the "shotgun" (right front) seat...

Windshield was peppered (funny, it didn't explode into a million pieces either) with 14 or so holes...

When later asked by others, he claimed he didn't "hear" anything but some pops, so I guess the old "auditory exclusion" phenomenon really does hold true at times. (I'm sure the decibel level inside the car was high that day, but so was his adrenalin level.)

And I'm also certain that his long term hearing will suffer as a result. At least mine would I'm sure.

Murphy's law states, when you are out on a date with a fine female; your car will stall, dangerous monsters or undead or neighborhood bullies will always be around you..

I would fire; but I think my violin tuning by ear days would be cut short...
 
I read a story a while back, I'll see if I can find it, about a guy who was sitting in his car early one morning when he saw someone sneaking up behind the passenger side with a gun. He pulled out his revolver and as soon as the man got to the window he fired. Said he instantly went blind and deaf (temporarily of course) got out of the car and started running. Him and the bg ended up running the same direction exchanging gunfire until both rn out of ammo. The ccw never got hit, bg got all 5 or so rounds (ccw had a revolver).

I always wonder about some of the FBI Files on discovery where the bg shoots from his car into someone elses while driving down the road and it doesn't seem to affect him at all. In one of them the bg even tried to have a conversation with the people in the other car.
 
I've seen things just as bad. I was watching a Cynthia Rothrock tape, Guardian Angel, when I saw her at the start of the film fire her gun into the air and scream "Wait! Police!" Why would a cop fire a warning shot into the air? Yeah, I know, it's a movie but you'd think they'd make some effort to use the guns as they would be handled in reality.

The Iceman, Richard Kuklinski spoke of a murder he did where he killed a guy on Christmas Eve for not having the money he was owed and taking him away from his family for that song and dance. Kuklinski pulled a gun and fired it from within the car with the windows up. He said he saw bright lights that blinded him for several minutes and his ears hurt like Hell -- he couldn't see or hear for a few minutes which made it impossible for him to get away. He did though but stated that was the only time he was truly afraid because he knew the cops were coming and he couldn't function after firing in the car. Forget about killers -- for the average joe to protect him/herself by firing in a car -- windows up or down is just plain dumb.:rolleyes:
 
All I can add is that we had to shoot a shotgun from inside a jeep cherokee at a 3-gun match awhile ago. The windows were open and I was wearing hearing protection, but it really wasn't bad at all. I was very thankful for my 18" barrel and quick detach sling swivels on that stage - many people struggled quite a bit with the sling getting hung on the stickshift and trying to maneuver a long barrel around in the cab (had to start with the gun "cruiser ready" on the passenger floorboard, then engage targets out the driver's side window).
 
Done it at a few IDPA matches with eye and ear protection. The windows on the car were all down. In all instances, the auto was a small car, a Plymouth Horizon hatchback or something like that.

I use a S&W M342 with a 2" barrel so when firing across the passenger side, out the passenger window, the gun was completely inside the car. I didn't go blind but I would not want to do it without hearing protection.

WHere I train we run these types of scenarios all the time. Shooting from a vehicle, getting out and firing, getting in and firing, all the time maintaining some semblance of proper form.

It's fun and interesting training. We train with the windows down (naturally) but if a real threat were presenting itself I would have no problem shooting directly through the window.
 
If we are talking about a defensive situation, I don't have any ability to predict when I may have to draw and fire. I'm not going to not shoot simply because I am in my car and/or haven't rolled down my windows.

so theyre in a car and mitchum is passed out drunk and theyre getting ready to do him in and boyle is carefully explaining to his fledgling hitman that most of your pros use .25 cal. cause it isnt so hard on the ears when youre shooting it in the car.

Good hearin' is probably useless when you are dead huh?

A friend of mine said a stop-n-rob job gone wrong down in NZ, the police came, and the two thugs fired from within the car... shattered ear drums...

But were still alive... a bit blinded also...
 
First, you drill a hole in the trunk lid.....

If it was my life or my hearing the choice is easy. However, when facing the insurance agent, "how did your window get broken?" would be harder to explain. My hearing is about gone anyway, too many jet engines in the old days before muffs. I ccw so I have already done the mindset of shooting thru the window.....chris3
