shooting at 100 yards

There is an article that might interest you by a fellow named Wm. Brent Altsheller, "Long Range Revolver Shooting." He explains that his club, the Louisville Rifle and Revolver Club, began moving the targets farther and farther out for their turkey shoots. The article originally appeared in the magazine Recreation in January 1912! As the article explains, there was considerable disbelief at the time because hitting a turkey size target at 300 yards with a revolver really isn't exactly something most folks can do. Another part of the reason for the disbelief and ridicule was that these turkey shoots, which evidently went on for several years, were held in a place named "Pewee Valley." But everyone familiar with the Louisville area knows that there really is a Pewee Valley. In any case, here is a citation for the original article:

Well, another fellow found that article, sometime in the 1980s if I remember correctly, and really couldn't believe the claims being made, so he set up his own range and tried it. He found that it was not only possible but fun, so he wrote an article about it for Shooter's Bible, again if I remember correctly. I can't find the article in Shooter's Bible, but if anybody has some of the old years laying around, they should find it. Just the idea of hitting a turkey at 300 yards!!! Thought you might like to it.

When I was on the Highway Patrol, we shot the 50 PPC course for qualifications. When that was over, things got serious. Six shots each on the 100 yard gong and the loser had to buy the beer.

S&W model 58, I never had to buy in 10 years.

100 yds isn't too tough. It's all sights and trigger control. If your shots are low raise a bit of frt blade or aim higher on the tgt if possible.
200 yds on out is where it really gets tough.

The farthest steel is 16" and @ 108 yards from the front edge of the deck. It really makes you concentrate. We like to shoot the closet to the farthest without missing.

10" at 17 yards, 18" at 53 yards, 18" at 75 yards, and 16" at 108 yards. The farthest steel is 1/2" so we can shoot rifle at it. I also have smaller ones for that distance, plus one with a target within a target. The hole in the middle is 3".

I love touching those long targets, it's pretty much how I started in the early 80's shooting metallic silhouettes. My go to gun has always been my 7.5" Redhawk loaded with 23gr H110 and Hornady 240 JHP before they were XTP. The club has about an 18" gong at around 110m, that one I can ring with any pistol I own, even the LCP with fair regularity.
