I'm just getting into competition shooting and am looking for a coat. I have found either an older, used leather 10-x coat or was considering going with the Creedmoor deluxe canvas (the ~$105 one not the 200 something one). Does anyone have any opinions on either of them? I'm leaning towards the new Creedmoor one right now but didn't know if the older leather ones maybe have some huge advantage I don't know about.

Generally, the stiffer coat provides more support in offhand but it has to fit like a corset to work, so a tight fit is critical. Leather has the ability to conform to your body (shoulders and elbows) better than cordura or canvas, so it may be more comfortable once broken in. On the line, leather is going to be hotter than canvas and I don't envy guys with black leather coats in July and August.
The rubber patches at your elbows and under your arm for the sling and at your shoulder for the rifle butt get worn and don't provide the same traction as new patches. Leather patches in place of rubber are useless except for padding.
I see used shooting coats on places like Ebay all the time for ridiculously low prices compared to new, but I wouldn't buy one without trying it on first.
I'm a big help, right?

If the leather coat is in good shape it is the better coat. It will give you much better support than the canvas coat will.

The canvas coats are only one layer in thickness, making them lacking in the support they provide. They are better than nothing. The cordura hard back coats are lined and quilted. They stand up on their own.

The bottom line is that the canvas coats offer little support but are better than no coat. Leather is superior to cordura because it offers the same support but is more supple.

fractal, as you know a tight coat is good.
A heavy coat, weighed down at the hems or by ammo in the large cargo pockets, also helps stabilize offhand shots.

Go used

I bought a leather 10x jacket off the internet 3 years ago for $100 and I haven't found a reason to buy anything else since.

If you looking to buy used for Highpower shooting, check out www.nationalmatch.us that is where all the big boys hang out and you can find some used stuff there.

Good luck,
Jim

You're lucky to find a good leather coat, most shooters who have them keep them forever. I think I'll be buried in mine.

I think the Hawkeye coats are the best leather shooting coats ever made, even better than the pricey European makes. I have a couple of them, one that I've used since college. They sure can get hot on the HP firing line at Camp Perry and Ft.Benning (think two sweat shirts under to soak up sweat.) but wouldn't shoot without them.
