What is the best way to be the most consistent possible to re-acquire the sight picture from shot to shot when shooting off bags?

When I shoot from bags I hold the butt of the rifle against my shoulder, fore stock on bags.

I generally use a small bag under the butt, with it braced against my shoulder. Bags up front to hold everything level without my help. I pay attention to see that the front bag is always under the same place on the forearm as where I put my hand when in the field.

I want the rifle to sit on the bags such that the crosshairs are close to centered on the target with very little help from me. Almost zero pressure anywhere to get as near a perfect sight picture as possible.

Large bag in front and small bag under butt. On lighter recoiling rifles (up to and including 30-06), let rifle rest on the bags, making sure sling/sling studs do not hang on bags causing rifle to recoil irregularly. Hold wrist of stock lightly w/right hand, left hand on rear bag to adjust elevation. Make sure trigger finger does not "drag" side of stock and pull trigger straight back. Get sights aligned on target and close eyes for 30 seconds. When eyes open, if sights not aligned on target, repeat until the natural point of aim is achieved. At this point, start trigger squeeze.

On heavier recoiling rifles, hold pistol grip more firmly and place back of left hand on front sandbag; grasp forend of rifle sufficiently to prevent rifle from slipping from grasp on recoil. Special care to be sure nothing hangs on sand bags such as sling swivels/studs, etc. Rifle must recoil exactly the same from shot to shot to achieve best groups. (Remember, the bullet is still in the barrel as it begins to recoil, so follow through is extremely important to good groups.) Check natural aim point as above and make sure cheek pressure and placement on stock and butt placement in shoulder is same from shot to shot. Eye relief should be same from shot to shot.

Basically, the rifle should lay on the bags or in your grasp exactly the same and you should not be "helping" to keep rifle pointed dead center.

Regards,

Bag up front, fist (or bag) in back under the stock, butt against shoulder.

The key is to be comfortable when the sights are where they need to be. Keep both feet flat on the ground and when everything's lined up, close your eyes and relax. Wait awhile and when you open your eyes, if everything's still not lined up, something needs to be adjusted.
