i read two takeaways. one bad: plural police bailed, i.e. saw gun, “held back” and “lost sight.” one good: an armed civilian saved the day.

“Officers reported seeing a gun in his hand and “held back a little bit” as they watched the suspect cross a berm and run into traffic. Police lost sight of the suspect and then heard two gunshots. The lieutenant said that the suspect “immediately began pointing a gun at passing traffic” on Paradise Rd. He then stopped a passing vehicle and pointed the gun at the driver. The driver of that vehicle was armed with a firearm and “engaged him and shot the suspect.”

I have some training in fighting from inside a vehicle. But it was pretty basic.

What training have members here received that might be useful against an armed carjacker? What did you learn? Who taught you?

"Plural police bailed"?

Just because LE may see a gun in someone's hand, and believe that person may become a threat to the Public at some point, that doesn't mean it's reasonable and appropriate to immediately engage the subject. Such decisions have to take into account the entire situational context , especially regarding the presence of any innocent members of the Public who might be hit by LE gun fire ... or, by shots fired by the armed person if he/she starts shooting in response to LE gun fire. While there may not be a 'perfect' answer to every situation, the safety of the Public has to be kept in mind, and sometimes starting a gun fight right away isn't the 'answer'.

A couple LE training classes (at outside agency venues). It was part of the training regarding LE firearm instructor update and an officer/street tactics class. Shooting from inside a veh presents risks to hearing (in real life w/o hearing protection), as well as risks to eyes (glass, hot gasses and generated debris), as well as possible bullet deflection (if fired through glass, near door pillars, etc). The constrained space inside a veh may present problems for someone being able to obtain a shooting position, as well as perhaps cause themselves to unknowingly sweep parts of their own body. Also, tunnel vision of a perceived threat, as well as suddenly obstructed vision (presence of threat), may prevent seeing innocents behind and around the threat (knowing what's 'down range').

Just some thoughts.

Vehicle tactics for civilians can be summed up as keep your doors locked at all times to prevent someone from getting inside. If possible keep the vehicle rolling to make yourself more difficult to access. It's bad tactics to engage from inside a vehicle for multiple reasons but as a civilian I would likely stay in my vehicle as long as possible to make it clear that I'm not the aggressor if someone is trying to access me inside the car. Once rounds start going off I'm going to do one of two things, drive away as quickly as possible, or if I can't I'm going to get out of the vehicle to fight.

If you can get your cover to move you out of danger ... how is that a bad thing? ;)

Fighting in or around vehicles sucks! I’m doing all I can to avoid fighting and dying from inside a vehicle. I’m either going to exit the area or exit the vehicle. Vehicles sans up armor kits suck at stopping projectiles.
