Whe using shooting sticks or other type of support, what is the most accepted technique - Resting the forend directly on sticks/support or stabilizing the off-hand with stick/support and controling the foreed with the off hand? Does it depend on situation?

I am thinking that if I a solidly supported off hand and kept the for end in contact with my fingers, I could get better minute control of the barrell.

What are the pros and cons of each? It seems most sticks are designed to have the forend rested directly on them while the off hand iss supporting the stick.

Thanks,

CB.

I only use shooting sticks sitting down but I think the technique would be the same. I put the rifle in the crotch of the sticks right where I would normally put my hand if shooting offhand. I then grip the shooting stick in a vertical manner yet still "support" the forend of the rifle with my thumb. I dont grip the forend at all.

I've only used shooting sticks for two seasons now, so this is kind of limited experience. Most of my shooting off sticks has been at the range. -

I found that I can adjust elevation if I lean forward or backward slightly. Side to side (azimuth) is handled with slight movement of my torso.

My off-hand holds the sticks and the sticks support the forend.

It takes a little practice to use the fixed-length type, figuring out how much to spread them before planting the tips.

(I also found out that, If I loop the sling over the sticks, I can arrange the whole thing like a tall bipod and rest the rifle butt on the ground.)
